Christmas on the Maasdam

Sail Date: December 19, 2015

Reviewed: 11 months ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Inside

Wishing to leave the snowy fields of Canada we booked on the 9 day Maasdam cruise for 6 island stops. I liked having the extra 2 days though due to weather and ship capabilities we were unable to do two of the scheduled stops so we ended up with 5 days at seas and only 4 stops. I was disappointed with the lack of festive spirit on the ship - guess it doesn't feel right not to have a real tree or snow. The Rotterdam restaurant staff were excellent as were the cabin attendants.

Cabin / Stateroom
No room fridge, dvd player didn't work properly and old style flat screen TV
Embarkation and Disembarkation
Ship Quality
Ship is getting old, when docking it feels like it is breaking up (usually early morning when you are sleeping), overhead retracting dome over swimming pool wasn't working so we got drenched a few times, computer room furniture unsuitable for working at.
Destinations and Excursions
having missed two stops and then docking so far from town in St Thomas didn't help. Loved St Kitts - took a tour with off book tour guide which was superb
Onboard Activities
Most evening shows were good but not exceptional - lacking some wow factors
No Movie times with movie name posted outside theatre and too much outside sounds to hear some of the audio.
The cooking show was lame - presenter was babbling and the chef didn't give a running commentary or give many helpful hints :(
Entertainment
Service and Staff
Food and Dining
Food was very good except for Lido where staff couldn't or wouldn't understand requests for smaller or particular portion sizes. Fruit drinks weren't available after breakfast unless you asked for them. The afternoon tea staff were very friendly and attentive and remembered your preferrances.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
Philipsburg, St. Maarten
Took the local bus back to port from French side for $2 each
Basseterre, St. Kitts
Did a complete island tour with 3 hours at best beach. The tour included free drinks for $25 - great deal - linked up with him after leaving ship.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Starbucks just up from ship - you need to buy to get the password

Tip

Table 159 for two had excellent wait staff!
