This was our honeymoon and first experience on a Holland America cruise. The Maasdam is a well kept, clean and friendly ship. But more about this later.Embarkation was relatively smooth despite the inexperience of our agent who fequently ran off for advice on how to check us in!We had been upgraded from a mini-suite to a suite and we were stunned by the space in our room. We had ordered the "Just for Us" package but it had been delivered to the wrong suite. Within 2 hours of being notified of this, fresh roses were delivered along with champagne and chocolates. Our verandah was huge with two loungers and a round table with four chairs. There was an incredible amount of storage space including the dressing area just off the bathroom. We believe the two things that really were outstanding were the service and food in the Rotterdam dining room. There cannot be many restaurants in the world to compare with Holland America's dining experience. It was magical!Despite having over 1,100 passengers the week we were aboard, the Maasdam never appeared crowded. In fact, most public lounges were empty most evenings. The ship was spotless throughout, with flowers everywhere. We were invited along with other honeymoon couples to various functions attended by the Captain and hotel manager. The service by white-gloved stewards and stewardesses at these was unbelievable. No sooner had one finished a cocktail, then it was instantly refilled without even asking. Hot food was also served along with other delicious delights.Of course, not everything was perfect. For example, the Rembrandt Theater sitelines were dreadful. Wherever one sat there was some kind of obstuction. Also, the caliber of entertainment was at times ordinary and few of the entertainers could sing properly. There were very few pool games and there was a gentle but obvious feeling of the ship's movement at all times at sea. But these are minor quibbles, really. Holland America can be very proud of its staff, who go out of their way to help you enjoy your cruise on the beautiful Maasdam. (30th September through 7th October).
