Keep a close eye on charges and added gratuities. Don't rely on guest services to remedy or follow up on issues.

This was our first cruise and overall it was positive, however we were bothered by a few things. Areas of the ship were very crowded, with some unruly children. Also, it felt like there were so many additional charges for things, that the bargain trip we thought we were taking turned out to be more than other trips we usually take to specific destinations. First-time cruisers should know about additional charges for upgraded restaurants, drinks, phone/internet services, bingo, Starbucks coffee, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, exercise group classes, cooking classes, ship tours, etc. while some of these are advertised, their costs are high and can add a hefty amount to the cost of your trip.

Leave all your cares behind. I find a calmness to being on the ocean. It has the deepest blue waters I have ever seen. You can stand on the very front of the ship and see nothing but the ocean vista! Once you're out there take a deep breath of unpolluted air and relax...

Eat breakfast super early or late, much less traffic at the buffet. Same with lunch. Book My Time Dining prior to your cruise for the same time every night. You'll get gthe same table/wait staff. Also, earlier dining times (5:45-6:00 pm) are better if you don't want to have your evening free to see the shows.

Most important tip: DON'T CHOOSE ROYAL CARIBBEAN!!! RUN!!!!! Disney is the best, unless you have teens with you. If you do have teens, I'm telling you - go with Carnival. Carnival has the BEST teen activities.

Be prepared for standing in lines a lot more than you will on many other cruise lines. They don't seem to have things organized well to keep people moving. Be prepared, if you self-carry on disembarkation day, to stand in line for a long time. Few staff members and total confusion by guests.

Try to see the ice show before the last showing, you'll want to see it again. The green water slide is the best water slide. The library has a few good gems in it, like a series by an author named Tiffany Green.

Wear good walking shoes. Get to the ice show at least 30 minutes early for the best seats, even if you have reserved seats. Read the ships paper each night so that you do not forget to attend something.

Check out the front of the ship where the Helipad is. Not many ships give you access to this area in the very front of the ship.
