The cruise to end all cruises

Sail Date: May 18, 2009

Reviewed: 6 years ago

Traveled As: Singles/Friends

Room Type: Suite

First the plusses: We had purchased the Suite Stateroom so we had the VIP treatment upon boarding. They took us out of the line and into an office where everything was already prepared. The whole process was very efficient. Also, the Suite was very nice. No complaints there. The food in the dining rooms was very, very good. What stood out mostly was the crew. In spite of very difficult conditions they were outstanding. Special thanks to the dining staff.

Now the minuses: The ship, the Holiday, is to be retired this November. That is about five years too late. The whole ship is dated and shows it. The traffic pattern is terrible. You cant get from one place to the other without changing decks. The outside decks dont go around the ship so no jogging or walking around the ship. Carnival is not responsible for the weather, I know, and it was terrible. One night the ship almost turned over from the wind, breaking wine bottles and glasses and injuring two crew members. We couldnt dock in Freeport because of the weather. The last night it rained so hard it almost flooded our cabin, leaking through the patio door. Took about a dozen towels to soak it up.
I know Carnival calls these the fun ships, but I didnt know it would be a five day spring break on board. It was terrible. (we are not youngsters) We searched the ship looking for a quiet little lounge to have afternoon drinks, and when we finally found one they kicked us out as they were going to have a game of trivia. A great little server told us to go down to the piano bar, so we did. It was OK, but soon the cigarette stench got to us and we had to leave.
One last comment. I have never in my long life seen so many fat, obese, and slovenly people in one place as were on this cruise.

Pros: Dining and staff

Cons: The ship and the "spring break" atmosphere

Recommends Holiday (RETIRED)? No.
