Review Summary

I have never been on a cruise before so I did not know what to expect. The Grandeur of the Seas is apparently a smaller ship and it showed... there was only the one dining room and a separate cafe, and there was only one night club. Moreover, the deck area and pool were pretty small and deck chairs were at a premium. That said, the small size allowed us to get to know the other guests a bit better--you ran into the same people all the time! The fitness center was small but apparently the appropriate size for the ship as we did not encounter any problems using equipment. The food was abundant but not the top notch quality that I would have expected--especially the desserts. The dining room fare, however, was quite good and excellent selection. The staff also were wonderful--very helpful and spirited. If they weren't enjoying their jobs, they sure did a good job of pretending!

Ship Experiences

Food and Dining

The dining room was nice and the food there was very good; the food in the cafe, however, was mediocre at best. We liked that the snack bar was open until 2:30PM...came in handy after a night of dancing!

The musical productions were very poor--we even walked out of one. The Newlywed game, which utilized audience participation was much better. And the other "activities" appeared to be geared at an older crowd.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to accomodate. Our dining room staff were especially good.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship was somewhat small and a little run down in places. In addition, there were workers laying carpet in one of the main staircases the duration of the entire cruise.

Cabin / Stateroom

We were upgraded to a room with a window--what a treat (made a huge difference)! The room was bigger than I had expected and there was plenty of storage.

Ports Of Call

Key West, Florida

Skip Margaritaville unless you're an over 40 tourist with a camera...
Don't Miss: There's a wine store there (noted in the cruise info) that is wonderful! (do the free tasting!)

Miami, Florida

The strip is lively and there were lots of good restaurants and bars to sample.

Port Canaveral, Florida

Unless you go to NASA, there's not much else to do but the beach, and frankly, this isn't one of the better ones.

Cozumel, Mexico

Unfortunately the weather was poor...rained much of the day. And we had received faulty information on the location of public beaches, so after two taxi rides, we ended up at one of the ship excursion destinations, Playa was pricey but there were plenty of activities if you like the water. Skip the open bar unless you drink beer...the "frozen drinks" were not worth it.
Don't Miss: Carlos and Charlie's at the end of the strip...the staff was very friendly and the drinks were huge!

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

We did the Beach Blast excursion and really enjoyed it--the snorkeling was brilliant and the facilities, although run down, were sufficient to enjoy good sunning and a nice meal. Oh, and be sure to bring your insect repellent...I was eaten alive by biting flies while at the beach.

Pros: Staff was very friendly/helpful and the rooms were bigger than I expected!

Cons: The night club, a great place to dance the night away, unfortunately had a terrible DJ who played the same songs every night
