Great Cruise! by susiealio

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Mexico

I am so impressed with Princess Cruises!  This is my second cruise and my first with Princess Cruise Line.  I enjoyed it immensely.  It seemed that every detail was well thought out by the crew and staff.  From the boarding to the disembarkation, everything was attended to in a friendly and professional manner.  Our waiter and server at our dinner table were spectacular!  The food was delicious and first-rate.  Our steward was just so efficient and pleasant.  All the staff was.  They smiled, answered questions, their demeanor was pleasant and friendly--I felt like someone important!  It was a wonderful experience.  I was also very pleased with the photographers and I don't usually like to have my picture taken!  Everyone was so kind and friendly.  We are looking forward to cruising again with Princess Cruises.

We had a really good time, met a lot of real nice people, the ship was beautiful and clean, the crew was friendly, the food was good and the shows were good. Over all it was very nice and we would do it again. We will do more of this small cruise, but we love the longer cruises more, this was our 36 cruise.

Very Good by sortinos

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

My wife and I really loved the cruise. I would have given it a  5 Star except the mattresses in the cabin were not that great.  Two twins put together for a king and one of them had a dip clear to the bottom to so that you could feel the springs.

Otherwise it was great!!  The entertainment, amenities, room service, food, all were wonderful.

We really loved having Charles from the Philippines serve us in the restaurants. He was so attentive, fun, knowledgeable and had great recommendations for the food.

Thank you for such a wonderful vacation.

Had a great time aboard.  Everyone working the ship was wonderful.  My wife was ill the first 2 days and the Medical people on the ship were fantastic.  Due to her illness we missed the Captains dinner and the tour in Juneau.  When illness was over,  we had a good tim.  Can't beat the superior food.

Awesome cruise! by Pookiescruise

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We chose  this cruise because we wanted to cruise Glacier Bay!  We were not disappointed!  Golden Princess is an older ship that has been nicely updated. We chose a mini-suite because we planned on using our room for sightseeing. It was spacious and clean.  It had two TVS which we utilized on cruise days.  Glacier Bay was  extraordinary.  We had a port side room and had an awesome view of the glaciers . The ship does turn so it doesn't matter which side you are on. Our excursions were booked through Princess.  We didn't see a big difference in price, liked their trips better and felt we were assured of the ship waiting for us if we were late.  Went whale watching in Juneau.  We saw humpback whales bubbling!  Our tour  guide said we had a seldom seen experience. We also saw killer whales!   We then went to Mendehall glacier which was awesome and while there saw salmon running!

Our other tours were also great.

The he only negative was the lengthy boarding process. However our room was ready.  We went to the international cage for lunch as recommended by other cruisers.  Short line and good food.  Came back there several times for lunch .

we thoroughly enjoyed the naturalist lectures and commentaries. A highlight of the trip.We would definitely cruise with Princess again.

Not so golden food by kctiger1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Loved Alaska-it's beautiful.  You must go!

Shore excursions for wheelchairs were super easy to book and set up.

Accessible room was nice but shower bench is TOO SMALL and so is the toilet.

Kids area on the ship was not accessible-door too narrow.

No lifts on the pools/hot tubs.

Room steward was great.

Engineer had to come lubricate my wheels on wheelchair after being in rain--Princess was great about working with me on this.

Princess tracked down my lost luggage (from airline) and was great about that.

Food was unremarkable and bland.

I don't recommend a room in the aft part of the ship--you get vibration from the engines when slowing down.

Liked having the coin laundry area.

Stewards for helping wheelchair users on and off ship were great.

Ketchikan and Victoria ports were not long enough!  Would have loved more time in these ports.

Juneau whale watching was my son's favorite.

Skagway 40 below, dog sled, gold pan was also a hit.

The food and entertainment were very good.  Would recommend Princess to anyone interested in cruising.

First time on Princess, will return by tombarrettdj

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Pros: Food was excellent as was service; Room was well designed, easy access to storage space; Public areas on ship were tastefully decorated; Anytime dining is the best; Boarding and disembarking were smooth, didn't feel like cattle; Seating was never crowded in buffet area; I am a musician and every entertainer on board was excellent!!

Cons: Wine and bar drinks were excessively overpriced-- a small glass of house wine cost more than a 1.5 litre bottle on shore! Our last Europe river luded unlimited free wine with lunch and dinner.

Security: I have a knee replacement and do not appreciate the aggressive groping by the security officer every time I returned to the ship. They should use the same scanners TSA uses at airports

Glacier Bay is a great experience by floridaHAL8

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We are a retired couple in our 70's traveling with our son and his wife. This is our second Princess cruise to Alaska.  This cruise went to Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, Ketchican and Victoria.  The last stop was canceled because of unexplained timing problems that they said had to do with the speed of the ship.  Members of the crew said it had been canceled before.

The cruise itinerary was great.  Glacier Bay is a real treat.  The last cruise to Alaska went to Tracy Arm.  The Tracy Arm glacier is more striking because of it's blue color and because the bay has large ice bergs floating around with seals on them.  Glacier Bay is a grander scale with more glaciers, less color and only small pieces of ice floating around.  Both are worth seeing...just make sure you aren't repeating an experience when you might want to see both.  We had an outstanding Alaska naturalist, Michael Modzelewski, who gave talks on Alaska and was broadcast throughout the Glacier Bay experience live over the PA describing what we were seeing.

We took the outstanding Glacier Point Wilderness Safari excursion out of Skagway.  It is rated the best Princess excursion, deservedly so.  We saw numerous whales and seals on our way to the Davidson Glacier.  When we arrived at the camp site we were kitted out for the canoe trip to the base of the glacier.  We were  in 30' canoes, paddling the easy river part and motoring the bay to the glacier, where we waded around at the silted area at the base.  Awesome.

In Juneau it is very easy to get the $20 round trip shuttle to the Mendenhall Glacier Park.  Walk toward the beginning of the town and it leaves from the parking lot.  We took the Nugget Falls hike off the photo point trail.  It takes you to the base of the falls, with the glacier right next to it.  It is about 3/4 mile easy path each way.

In Ketchikan we took the public serive bus for $1.00 round trip (senior) to Totem Bight Park.  The park has good signage.  Stop at the office for a map.  The park is free and you can do it in less than 2 hours, plus about 1 1/2 hours on the bus total.  Ask at the tourist info for the bus stop location on main street before the tunnel.

The Golden Princess was not a particularly comfortable ship.  We like a large library space and areas with comfortable seating for reading.  The Skywalkers Bar up in the back of the ship is the best place to sit and read, meet friends or look out.  This space is not used except when it opens at 10 PM.  It is by far the nicest public area on the ship, since their interior public spaces generally have no view, except for the gym.

The pastry cook on board was exceptional compared with other ships.  The rest of the food was average to good.  If you have anytime dining ask the maitre'd to reserve the table of your choice for you at your choice of time at the beginning of your cruise and you won't have to wait in line.  Just call and cancel the reservation if you decide to not eat in the dining room.

Billy Reid was our entertainer of choice...piano and song, engaging the audience well.  Princess does not have set, large, comfortable venues for their entertainers.  We really prefer the continuity of a set time and place for the performers for the duration of the cruise.  It adds to the comfort level.

Outstanding, the weather was perfect, no rain, lots of sun.  Wonderful food and service.  Most of the shows on board were very good quaility.  Glacier Bay was great, the Bay was calm as glass, there was blue sky everywhere, snow covered mountains all around us.  We saw wildlife, eagal and whales.

All the towns we stopped in were very interesting, lots of good shopping.

Princess Cruise Line did not live up to its reputation by michaeldurhan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

There were several cruise lines sailing the Alaskan voyage we wanted to take and we chose Princess as we felt they would be an overall better experience.  I have sailed on Carnival, Norwegian, RCL, Disney and Celebrity in the past and would rank Princess at the bottom......last resort cruise line.  The Golden Princess was a great ship and we loved the layout.  The Glacier Bay itinerary was fabulous and we saw exactly what we wanted to.  The crowd on board was lovely and we enjoyed everyone we met at meals and on our tours.  So what went wrong.....

     1.  Embarkation: we were happy and excited to get on the ship so we were fine waiting in line for security and check in.  Looking back it was sign of what was to come.  We waited a little over an hour and we arrived at the port via taxi at 12:30.  We thought it was just slow since it was only the second week for this ship in Seattle.  This still may improve as the season goes along.  We finally got on the boat and people were being told to go left or right on an exterior deck.  We did not get greeted or enter into a center atrium like most ships which was very odd.  The staff did not look to see what from we were in so we were sent in the opposite direction of our room.  We later realized some people were given big pink stickers at check in so they could be sent left or right at boarding.....our person forgot to give us one.  This became a real pain as the elevators were tied up with folks needing assistance and hauling luggage.  We, along with many others, were struggling on the stairs with our carry on luggage trying to get to our rooms.

     2.  The food and lines for food:  I have never waited in line so much to eat on a cruise ship before.  The Horizon Court buffet on Lido had strange times and often only one side was open.  The buffet food was also pretty horrible with very few options.  The salad bar was the most limited I have ever seen.  You'll love it if you like pickled herring, sliced cheese and fruit.  There was always a line, no matter what time we went.  The worst was the day we arrived in Juneau.  We had a noon tour and the buffet opened at 11:30; dining room at noon.  So, we went up to the buffet at 11:15...where the line was horrendous.  We didn't even get a plate of food until 11:50 and of course were late for our tour.  It was an independently booked helicopter tour so they waited for us.  Only one side was open so it was the only option for people wanting to eat before getting off the boat...we docked at 11:15am.  Hopefully they will work this kink out....had we known it was so going to be so bad we would have ordered room service.  The dining room food was also pretty bad.  We had early seating at 5:30 and then our dining room turned into open seating so we were never rushed but we often didn't get out until right before 8pm!!!  Service was incredibly slow.  The food taste, temperature and portion sizes were awful.  The last two nights in the main dining room were good and selection was much improved - we think they wanted to end on a positive note.  We ate Saturday and Sunday night in the dining room and were very disappointed.  The 6 other people at our table did not show up on Sunday.....and it was Mother's Day and formal night! Monday we did balcony dining and it was VERY much worth the extra money and was by far our best food experience on the boat.  Tuesday we tried the dining room again, awful, and two of the other 6 people were trying the dining room again as the buffet was lacking.  Wednesday we ate at the Crown Grill....it was wonderful and worth the extra money.  We felt frustrated that after paying for a cruise were having to pay extra for specialty dining to get a good meal.  We also ate in every port at local establishments which was much better than the ship food....this was not what we had planned on doing as we have alway liked the food on all of our previous cruises.  We ate in the dining room for breakfast ech day...you can't really mess up breakfast and they were happy to make things that weren't on the menu, like French toast.  Service was always slow, but we don't mind that and like sitting and visiting.  The grill out by the pool was event, looooong lines always.  One thing I did like was during the Glacier bay day they had soup and chili stations set up outside which was a nice thought and lines weren't too bad as nobody knew about them.  Food is critical to our experience and always a large part of our vacations.  On a cruise it is important to stay full to help with any sea sickness and it was very rocky due to wind and waves on our voyage.....the food was a real let down and the main reason we will never sail Princess again.  Also, it was cold on our cruise, so if people wanted to sit somewhere outside of their room they sat inside up on Lido deck.  This meant there was almost no seating available for people with food from the buffet.

     3.  The entertainment:  the entertainment and entertainment options were the worst out of any cruise I have ever been on.  I turned 40 during the cruise and we were definitely on the younger side.  However, there were sevarl couples in our age range and quite a few families traveling  with children.  The nightly shows were awful, I fell asleep during two of them. Mt he cruise director boasted being the cruise director for over 30 years....even he was old!  Time for something new and fresh for sure.  The disco played music from the 50's and 60's which I don't mind, but most of the ship was in bed by 10pm.  The comedian, mon night only, even was a little boring. Mather magician, one night, was pretty bad and who even likes magicians anymore?!?!  There were 2 shows with the ships cast where there were no scene or costume changes....this is just not up to par with other cruise line entertainment.  I was very surprised by this and felt like I was at a senior center production...even our local high sch school has better performances. Mt he last show, British Invasion, was actually really good.  Wish they had done a couple more shows like this.  The last two night sof our cruise were what we had been expecting for the whole week....it was like they finally got it together by the last 2 days.  That or they try to end on a positive note....no idea.  We will definitely not choose Princess again as long as there is another option available.

Beautiful scenery.  Awesome mountains.  Saw lots of whales.  Great food.  The wait staff in the buffet dining areas were not as attentive as some on other cruises, we had to flag them down to get drinks.  Our waiter (Eugene) in the main dining room was great.

Review of Golden Princess trip to Alaska by cordell

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Golden Princess / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Overeall, we had a wonderful time, but there is always room for improvement.

I spent more time waiting in line on this trip than on previous cruises.  They didn't open enough food lines promptly so lines got long.  Sometimes they didn't have the excursions desk open so people couldn't fix their problems with excursions and had to go to the general desk.  That meant double the number of people waiting for service from the general desk.   Lines were generally long waiting for elevators as well.  People in line with me who had been on previous Princess cruises said the lines were unexpectedly long compared to their previous cruises.

The buffet lines had hand sanitizers at each entrance but our main dinner dining room did not.  We usually used the stairs to get to our dining center and I would have liked to use the dispenser before eating. Other cruises I have been on pushed the sanitizing dispensers heavily, so I was surprised. Three of my party contracted respiratory infections after the cruise, but I can't definitively say we became ill from cruise germs.  Service in the buffet line areas was poor regarding beverage service and silverware.  We usually had to flag staff down to get beverages and clean sliverware if people had recently used the table.

This was the first cruise I have been on where the ship was late docking.  In Victoria, many people missed their excursions because we docked more than an hour late and it was a short shore time anyway.

We loved Michael, the guest speaker who shared his experiences living in Alaska, and didn't miss any of his talks.  It was great having the park ranger staff on board to explain things and point out sights we might be missing.  Our wait staff members in the main dining center were wonderful and the food was terrific.  Our staterooms were more spacious than other cruises I have been on and always clean and fresh.  Even though I lost a few bucks, the casino was a nice size.  The smoke was hard to take since it drifted into the non-smoking side and we often walked through the smoky side of the casino on our way to other destinations. We enjoyed the stage entertainment but I was surprised that there wasn't at least one "famous" performer.  On previous cruises, we had at least one pretty famous comedian or musical group and the entertainers were more mid-level this trip.   In summary, we had a great time and the ship experience was good.
