Golden Princess Cruise Review to Mexico

Review SummaryThis was our 20th cruise, our second on Princess and our first to the Mexican Riviera. Though the ship was larger than we like (we knew this going in), it was extremely well layed out, easy to get around, clean and had very pleasing decor. One of the drawbacks was a very large group of high school kids on early spring break...we were told by staff that there were over 500 of them. The first two days they pretty much ran wild, but after that chaperones and ships security slowed them down and things on the ship settled down. Our cabin (mini-suite) was great and our room steward and dining room staff were outstanding. Our only complaint there was that the bed was very firm. My wife and I take cruises to relax and we were able to do that on this ship. We very much enjoyed Skywalkers nightclub both during the day and night, the Explorers lounge, the Vista lounge and the small pool all the way back aft under Skywalkers. We also enjoyed just sitting on our balcony in the early evenings watching the sun go down. Food in the dining room ranged from good to excellent, the deserts were consistently excellent, service was outstanding, the food in the buffet was generally very good, and the food and service in the Sterling Steakhouse was outstanding. One thing that surprised us was the surliness of many of the bartenders...we had not come across that before. We enjoyed bingo and the art auctions on sea days and my wife enjoyed the casino. We did not go to any of the shows. Ports were nice but the tour we took in Puerto Vallarta was disappointing. It was a town tour with a trip to a tile factory and tequila distillery. Only the distillery was interesting. We did not go ashore in Mazatlan but did do whale watching in Cabo San Lucas, which was very interesting and fun. As on our last Princess cruise (the Coral Princess) embakation and disembarkation were extremely well handled, fast and painless. Cudos to Princess for that. Overall it was a fun cruise and we will cruise with Princess again.
Pros: Ship layout, food, dining room waiters, room steward.
Cons: Ship too big, surly bartenders, large teen groups.
