nice rooms, below average food quality

Sail Date: July 05, 2008

Traveled As: Large Group

Room Type: Balcony

This ship should not be on an alaska route. It is clearly designed for a warmer climate with many of the ammenities (bars and eating areas outside around pool areas). The food quality was below average to poor in general at both the dining seatings and buffet. The presentation of food was on average poor. The ship ammenities were average or below average but the entertainment was definitly lacking. There was few 'big show' type of productions. Locations were often changed with little notice and lounge bands were of the 3 1/2 star hotel variety. The pursers office was always lined up with rarely more than 2 long faced agents serving long lines. I could go on but whats the point... we will give princess one more chance in a warmer climate. The ships rating on Vacations to Go is 4.5. Clearly this was a 4 or lower at best. Princess Cruises are in my opinion are not doing there cruise line any favours by offering this ship and itinerary.

Pros: Room sizes

Cons: cruise amenities and services lower quality, cruise ended early due to docking schedule at victoria shutting service and ammenities down a day early, food quality and presentation in dining room and buffet of low to poor quality in general

Recommends Golden Princess? No.

Service and Staff
An exception was the dining room waiters and staff who were excellent. Buffet staff was poor at best

Cabin / Stateroom
Skagway, Alaska
Rugged beautiful area of Alaska, but way too long in port for this small community (unless you book back to back excursions). Time should have been added elsewere... like Victoira.
Don't Miss: train ride for scenery and value
Victoria, British Columbia
arrive at 7pm to long lines and back on board 4 1/2 hours later. Best place to spend time on entire cruise with to shortest amount of time... what were the Princess people thinking? In essence this cuise looks good on paper but in Reality its a 6 day cruise because of this itinerary. Poor planning! The few passengers I talked to were becoming unhappy at this point. ps. A cab anywhere may be double what you used to paying... be careful.
Don't Miss: Inner harbour at Sunset is beautiful. Too short to enjoy
Juneau, Alaska
good stop over time allowed, with lots of excursions available. Good stop unless too many ships in port (2nd half of our stop day) then get out of town and back on ship or tour.
Don't Miss: Helicopter tour are expensive but beatuiful. Songs shusi uptown is the locals favorite... best fresh shusi I've tasted ever & wow is all I can say about the rolls
Ketchikan, Alaska
4 cruise ships in port at once on a Wed. what a zoo! Not even worth getting off the ship unless you booked a excusion... just wall to wall people everywhere... not worth the stop unless on an excursion and even those were rushed and busy.
Don't Miss: Anything away from town or just people watching from your ship
