7 Night Classic Southern Caribbean (San Juan Roundtrip) Sail Date: March 18, 2006 Ship: Golden Princess Cabin Type: Inside Traveled As: Couple Reviewed: 11 years ago
The ship was beautiful! Everything was always clean and it was large enough to find quiet spots away from the business of the restaurants, lobbies, etc. A perfect boat for couples, large groups of friends, family reunions, etc. However, this probably isn't the most ideal boat for young children- not a lot of organized activities and none of the fanicer rock climbing walls, movie theaters, golf courses some other ships have. However, this lack of ship entertainment is made up for by the number of ports the ship stops at!
Food and Dining

The food was overall good. Having cruised before, I was expecting what I had gotten at Royal Caribbean - chocolate midnight buffets, great dining during all meals and in between. The between meal selections are limited to pizza and burgers and the midnight buffet leaves a little to be desired. But the food at dinner was always super- they were really great about letting you get as much off the menu as you wanted!

Service and Staff

Everyone was really sweet and helpful. Again, compared to my cruise on Royal Caribbean, it left a little to be desired. Besides staff assigned to the hall of our stateroom, noone learned our names or bothered to even ask (including waiters, excursion staff, etc). We also had friends who had a foul encounter with a purser's desk employee regarding a bill discrepancy- she was rude and patronizing when our friend challenged a bill discrepancy worth $20 saying that our friend was being cheap asking for so little money.

Seeing as though we were poor medical students, we opted for an interior state room. The room was big enough to not feel crowded while two people were getting dressed or relaxing in the afternoon. No need to upgrade to a bigger room unless you really want a balcony (and that may be a good enough reason b/c they're really nice!)
We hired a private taxi driver to take us to the petit titons and the volcanoe. he showed us the local culture, food, nightlife, daylife, everything! it was fantastic. the volcanic hot springs are super-relaxing and the drive thru the rain forest is beautiful.
Don't Miss: getting to the other side of the island to see the volcano etc is worth it!
Don't bother doing the ship's excusions- you can do all of them yourself for a fraction of the cost! We did the rum distillery and the Hamilton caves and then made it to a beach- definitely recommend the rum distillery! fun and educational.
Don't Miss: Mount Gay Rum Distillery
Pros: 5 stops at port, spacious deck, great gym, good entertainment
Cons: food could have been better, personalization of service
