BERMUDA was beautiful, weather wasn't

Room Type: Suite

We (my wife and I and our 10 y.o. son and daughter) cruised on the Explorer on a 5 night trip to Bermuda out of Bayonne on April 24th for our 5th anniversary. This was our 1st time on RCI and have cruised with Norwegian, Carnival, and Princess in the past. I have to say this was the best ship yet with the Miracle in a close 2nd. We especially loved the size of our junior suite which was perfect for the four of us with plenty of storage and a huge balcony. The variety of activities, friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, and overall dining options and food were all very good. The kids loved the adventure camp and the Island of Bermuda was incredible with incredible vistas and picturesque scenes in every parish. The weather was not our side as we had rain and gale force winds on both sea days causing them to close the decks and empty the pools! It was difficult for all 3000 passengers to find things to do indoors when we all came to climb rock walls and bask in the sun...However, it never really felt overcrowded and the shows and casino filled in some time. Would sail the Explorer again but probably a different itinerary where the Atlantic cannot intrude on our big plans!

Pros: The ship layout and size, staff, suite, and value for $. Adventure camp for kids! The ice show!

Cons: The Weather! Duration on the island too short. Not enough elevators

Recommends Explorer of the Seas? Yes!

Food and Dining
Food was above average to good and a step above Carnival and Princess. Dining room was beautiful and laid out nicely. Windjammer always well stocked with good variety, Johnny Rockets loved by the kids. Didn't try Portofinos
Entertainment
Many activities were cancelled due to the weather through no fault of RCI. We did sample the spa which was OK though not great and definitely overpriced. Didn't catch all the shows but the ice show is awesome and my son and I did skate once for fun. I also tried the golf simulator which was fun except there are no tees so you always hit off the mats...
Ship Quality
HUGE with a nice layout that was easy to navigate. Clear deck plans near every elevator. Decor tasteful and not tacky like Carniival. Very clean for a 10 year old ship. Never overcrowded.
Cabin / Stateroom
We has a Junior Suite #9294 starboard. Perfect size with plenty of storage space and a nice bathroom with a full tub. Balcony was large with full length sliding glass doors and floor to ceiling windows spanning the entire side of the room allowing for lots of light and nice views in port.
Service and Staff
All the staff were excellent and everyone always smiled and greeted you wherever you were. They take pride in the ship and maintain it well! They even repainted our balcony banister while we were in Bermuda! The counselors running the adventure camp for kids were great and really had fun with the kids!!
Children's Programs
Good variety of games for the kids inside. Big arcade for video game junkies. Excellent staff. Very safe and good mix of age appropriate activities.
