Review summary

We had a great vacation, however to us atleast is speaks alot about how a cruise company runs its smaller, older vessels and Royal isn't doing a good job. They have a great staff in place, but the ship itself is that diamond sitting in the back of the box that has lost its shine.

Embarkation

Our embarkation went smooth. No problems. However our checked luggage was delivered about 12 or so cabins away, luckily we passed it in the Hall and rolled it to our cabin.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Switching to Royal we expected a little of an upgraded experience over Carnival, and we were sadly disappointed. The Lamb and Pork Shanks in the Main Dining Room tasted exactly the same, just like a roast in our crockpot at home. And that was the entire story of the food in the Main Dining Room uninspired dishes that tasted like food we could have made ourselves at home. Sadly our best meal was beef carvings in Windjammer. I know the big push these days is for specialty dining, but the food they do serve should still be good.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Bobby and his staff did an awesome job putting on some great activities. Adult Quest and Battle of the sexes were among the best. James who hosted bingo and many other activities was great with his job.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Overall we were very disappointed in the entertainment. I will say we did come in excited, and even though we did choose a smaller, older vessel we assumed Royal would still put on a good show. Now we did have great comedians and one good singer, but that was it. The Royal Singers and DANCERS were awful. Not just compared to other cruise acts we've seen, but compared to local small town Junior High Theater and Dance awful. The dancers were so off on their timing I literally felt sorry for them. The singers, I don't know if it was a sound board issue or what, but the harmonies were non existent awful. The 2 good singers Rebecca and Michael if not singing solo were drowned out by the horrible screeching of the other 2 singers. Then the program itself, "Can't Stop the Rock"? was more like Can't Stop the Adult Contemporary with hardly any rock in the show. At the end of dont stop the rock everyone was introduced and we were shocked to learn the worst singer/part of the act was actually the vocal Captain. We didn't expect a Broadway Show, but we did expect quality even on a smaller vessel.

Children's Programs

Adventure Ocean was the best. Our little girl spent a lot more time in there than we were planning, because she was begging us to go. Anna and Cola and the rest of the staff were awesome. Great activities and program!!!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff was great. Michael our steward was fantastic. He was efficient, polite and hard working. The dining staff both in Windjammers and the main dining room were sure to see that we were 100% taken care of and satisfied. The activities staff were all super friendly and funny. All the staff we interacted with greeted us and were polite.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Cleanliness was a 5, but everything else well. She is an old lady that needs alot of TLC. I love the smaller vessel because they give you that more personal feel, so I hope they will soon give her a face lift. Not a makeover but fix the imperfections like the rust, and change the furnishings. Save the small ship charm.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
We had a Junior Suite. It was good size, good layout, plenty of storage. Michael kept it clean for us. It just needed the furnishings replaced and some maintenance. Tables missing chunks, the intercom not working to hear announcements, the AC struggling to keep the room 74, the worn upholstery, the TV speakers partially blown, and the scariest the balcony door not latching.

Ship tip

You can have a great vacation, but don't come in with high expectations.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

4 out of 5
Costa Maya has a great setup even without doing excursions. It's only problem is the people are unhelpful unless you are handing out money and the shop people are pushy as heck. We wanted to eat at a place we heard of from previous travelers called Don Lolo. We asked a few people in some stores we went to if they knew where it was. NO ONE acted like they had even heard of in. So after we walked through one store that you can walk completely through, there it was on the back side of 2 other stores that had "never heard of it". Come on!!!! Don Lolo was great and the pool/ bar area we went to was great also. My wife said this was her favorite port of call to date.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Just like embarkation, it was routine.
