If I had to rate my best to worst, I'd rate Disney Wonder as my best, followed by RCCL's Liberty of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Vision of the Seas, Carnival Breeze, then Empress of the Seas. I believe the folks on Empress really do try to make the best of what they have, which is very lacking. There is only one pool for everyone. They open the Windjammer at various hours to accommodate snack times as they don't have separate snack areas to take advantage of. The International Parade of Flags is good, even though the Centrum is very small. We were happy to find a few T-shirts in my husband's size. The elevators are very small, so if you have anxiety issues and claustrophobia, you'll find yourself having to wait until there are very few to no people on the elevators. The elevators seemed to have minds of their own. For instance: you're on deck 7. You see the elevator is on deck 10. You push the button to go up. The elevator goes from deck 10, passes down to deck 4, then goes back up to deck 7 without even stopping on deck 7 before going to deck 4--weird. My husband slept most of the day as that was the only time he actually could. The folks next to us an above us had kids with them. They would kick the walls. I told my husband they may be kicking the walls in their sleep. The folks above us had kids who would jump out of the beds and land with thuds on the floor. For the most part, the kids on board weren't bad. The good thing about this cruise was there were some kids on board. I'm not a fan of no children allowed.

Getting checked in and onboard was very easy.

Food and Dining
4 out of 5
We ate at the Windjammer primarily. My husband is insulin-dependent diabetic, so there is very little in the main dining room he can actually eat. We have to follow the Keto diet, and the best way we can do so is at the Windjammer. It's also hard to convey to the wait-staff at the main dining room that No Sugar Added is not the same as Sugar Free. They also don't seem to understand that honey and fruits are loaded with sugar, which is harmful to diabetics. Telling them, "No Carbohydrates" and "No root vegetables" also seems to confuse them. At the same time, they do try to accommodate dietary restrictions as best as they can understand them. They have Gluten free items, which is good. They did seem to have an extremely small amount of no sugar added desserts, so if you wanted any, you had to get them with your meals and not wait. We had a brunch one morning/afternoon, which was pretty good. The coffee served at brunch was much better than the coffee served in the Windjammer. The Windjammer's coffee is weak, so if you want good, strong, coffee, you'll need to go to Boleros to the Coffee Shop there and spend some money. The food overall isn't bad, though having hamburgers soaked in water isn't my thing. When the bacon was cooked crispy, it was great. The ice-cream served in the dining room tends to melt rather quickly. The soft-serve ice-cream in the pool area is very good. On some ships, the soft-serve ice-cream is self-serve, but on the Empress, there is a waiter/waitress wearing plastic gloves to serve you the soft-serve. At the main dining room, there are Hand Sanitizers. At the Windjammer, there are sinks with soap and paper towels as well as Hand Sanitizers. The sinks reminded me of the washing stations downrange that we had to use before going into the Chow Hall tents. I like the push to get people to wash their hands before eating as I know there are those who use the bathroom and don't wash their hands.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
There were a lot of scheduled activities as usual, but not many were of interest to me. This is not a real issue for me, as I can entertain myself. We do go to Veteran Get Togethers, but this ship didn't have any as other ships do. Even if the activities offered are of no interest to me, I know the staff tries to cater to a wide demographic, which is not easy.
Guest Services
5 out of 5
Guest Services folks are great. When we got our final invoice, we were confused at the amount shown at the end. We had cashed out the night before after making final purchases. As it was, we didn't owe money. We were owed money.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
The comedy juggler was great. The four guys who performed at the pool deck and in Boleros were very good, too. For the Karaoke, the woman who did Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" was very good. My husband seemed to think so, too, as he hooped for her, and nearly got sucker-punched by me for hurting my ears.
Children's Programs
We don't have kids, unfortunately, and I doubt they'd let us in to play with the kids, either.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
I'd say the service was great, but we've had other room stewards on other ships (including RCCL) set the standards higher than what we got on this ship.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
We could see the staff worked hard to maintain the ship's cleanliness. Unfortunately, the ship is in need of repairs, upgrades, and rust removal in some places. The inside of the ship is gorgeous, despite the rust spots. Carpeting in some places needs to be replaced.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
The cabin was very well maintained and clean. What were some issues for us were the bunk beds that we banged our heads into (forgetting they were there), and the shower was way too small. The bathroom showers in balcony staterooms, while small, are not as small as the staterooms without a balcony. This was our first non-balcony stateroom, and it will definitely be our last.
Ship tip
Research the ship first. Don't go on this ship for any cruises lasting longer than 4 or 5 days. Use this ship only for going to places with very few sea days. Don't go on this ship for long trips with multiple days at sea.
There are some nice looking buildings and some pretty places at Key West. We had hoped to dock at Navy Mole Pier and go to the main Base across the bridge. As it was, we walked to the Navy Base closest to us and went to the Navy's "Mini Mall". We've driven to Key West some years before. It's sad there are businesses who jack up their prices when cruise ships come in. There was an Irish pub that we went to. We were looking for a place that was not crowded to get something to eat. As it was, it was too loud, and the guy singing was too vulgar. It was as though they didn't care there were children outside the pub, which was open. Fortunately, we found a Thai restaurant, which was very good. The Thai restaurant is called "Thai Cuisine and Sushi Bar".
While this port was extremely hot, it was still great. The island is pretty. My husband had a good time in the water. The food served was good. I love the fact there are no salespeople at the docks acting like vultures on a carrion when we're there. I walked around the shops looking for a Bahamas flag to add to my collection of national flags. It wasn't till I got to about the 3rd or 4th sales pavilion that someone asked if I needed assistance. As crazy as that sounds, I was happy to not have people following me around and repeatedly trying to get me to buy something. When I told the sales folks what I was looking for, one of them actually walked to another pavilion to find someone who had what I was looking for. I really liked having someone willing to go above and beyond, while not harassing me about making a sale.
