Review summary
Empress of the Seas is an older ship that was one of two RCCL ships that went to Cuba. When Americans were no longer allowed to go there, the itinerary changed. Our cabin was comped by the Casino. We had an inside cabin that was adequate for our needs. A very friendly and helpful staff for our cabin, MDR and bar. Entertainment is great. Loved the in house musicians and dancers and the house band. Great comedians and magicians. Fun cruise that we enjoyed very much.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
We were able to board quickly as Platinum members. Strange that we had to go upstairs for a photo op then downstairs to actually exit the building. Then walk across the street to board the ship.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
I thought the food was very good in the MDR and the buffet. As the Empress of the Seas is an older ship there is only one specialty restaurant, Chops Grille. We did not do any specialty dining. We were on any time dining and we were seated at the same window table every night with the same wait staff. Really enjoyed the food and the service.
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Pools were full and I could always find a chair. Trivia is offered at least 4 times a day.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
The stage shows were great. A talented group of performers. Loved the comedy and the magic shows. Also enjoyed the steel drum band on the pool deck.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Fantastic staff from our room attendant to our MDR wait staff and our bartenders. Always helpful and friendly.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
This is an older ship and does show its age. Smaller ship so it was easy to get from one end to the other after dinner to go to a show. Especially liked the large library with floor to ceiling windows and comfy chairs and loveseats to sit and read while looking out at the sea.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
this was a comped cabin from the Casino. It is not my favorite cabin type but surprisingly it was a comfortable room and adequate for our needs. We set the bed configuration to two twins and that gave us enough room to step out of bed . If we had the beds together you would have to crawl out of bed as there is not enough room on either side to get out of bed comfortable. Important if you are older and have difficulty with balance.
Ship tip
If you have an inside cabin and do not have a refrigerator, you can ask for one. Also you can ask for extra hangers.
We enjoyed the beach. The island is completely different than the last time we were there. Even though there were two ships docked we did not feel crowded.
Great review, it was concise, fair and open minded. I booked this ship just be cause of the size and can't wait to board and have fun. Happy cruising to all!
