We chose this ship primarily because it is NOT typical of the cruise ships that are most heavily advertised and available in the contemporary cruise ship market. With a passenger capacity of about 740, it is a fraction of the size of today's average cruise ship; the Costa Marina is a stark contrast to the megaships that have just been launched. As most cruise clients know, it's not easy to find a smaller ship nowadays unless you are prepared to sign up with one of the super-deluxe lines such as Regent, Seabourn, or Silversea.
Nearly all the passengers on board during our cruise were from Italy, France, Portugal and Germany. We (an American couple traveling with adult family members) did not mind being in the minority, and we enjoyed the opportunity to be immersed into European culture and languages.

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The variety and quality of food were outstanding. Some of the seafood dishes (the sole and snapper in particular) were not as fresh as I would have desired, but the chef's recipes and preparation were first rate. The Italian, poultry and vegetarian dishes were especially delicious, as were all of the desserts and appetizers!

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The stage shows were all terrific. The dancing was skillful to the point of being acrobatic, and the performers' voices, especially Ronan O'Leary's and Chloe Porter's, were outstanding. The shows were fast paced, varied, and inspiring. Laura, the pianist at Harry's Bar, was also terrific! She played a wide variety of melodies with passion and style.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The best part of the experience on board the Costa Marina. I miss these people already!

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship is not new, and the first thing an experienced cruise client will notice is that the facilities such as the pool and fitness center are small, and the rooms lack amenities such as verandahs or picture windows. This is not a luxury ship. But it is a ship with character. The esprit de corps of its crew and staff is obvious from day one, and their sincerity , good will and overall commitment to excellent service are extraordinary and unforgettable.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Not deluxe, but immaculately clean and certainly comfortable.

Pros: The personal approach and genuine concern on the part of the staff and crew. The quality of the entertainment, especially the stage shows.

Cons: This is not the first choice for those who want an ultra-modern large super-deluxe cruise ship.
