Sail Date: March 01, 2007 Ship: Celebrity Mercury Cabin Type: Oceanview Traveled As: Family (older children) Reviewed: 10 years ago
Very disappointing. The ship is old and worn. The buffet food was buffet food - nothing exciting or very good. The restaurant was better but service wasn't very good. The pools close at 7pm and are not heated. They weren't swimmable until we reached Puerto Vallarta (5 days into the cruise). The overall entertainment was poor (two exceptions) and the activities were lacking. And they gouge you for absolutely everything. $30 for a bingo card. $15 for a photo. Give me a break. My first cruise and what a bummer. I heard other multi-cruisers commenting all week long how this was not up to "cruise standards" and how other lines were so much better.
Food and Dining

Buffet food was unexciting. The restaurant food is better but service is lacking. Constant struggle for over a week to get served a cup of coffee followed by cream. Cream, salt, pepper, sugar could not be touched because of the concerns of transmitting a virus. So one person would come by and pour a cup of coffee and then leave. Sometimes it was 15 minutes before someone could be flagged down to bring cream. And then if you wanted a second cup of coffee...... The pizza station was great. So was the Palm Deck Grill (phenomenal burgers) and the ice cream station.

There was a comedian one night that was terrific and a singer the other night that was also very good. The DJ was decent too. However, the Celebrity singers and dancers were atrocious. There was a tall skinny blonde they slapped giant eyelashes on who acted like a colt learning to walk. There was a band with a singer who made people wince because they were out of tune or off key. With fingers in your ears, that was actually pretty funny when you watched other people's reactions. We showed up for dance lessons that never happened. We showed up for Daquiri tasting and the crew there didn't even know it was supposed to happen. So they slapped a few drinks together (I hope I never taste Daquiri's like that again) and left. The musicals and shows were so loud, people sat in the audience with fingers in their ears. The activities waned during the day, such that you found yourself with several hours of nothing to do. Which would have been great if the water in the pools was warm.

The teen room smelled. We have no idea what died in that room but it was gross. We were in there as the boat was leaving and several other families that were also exploring came in. We all asked each other what stunk. The head housekeeper was called in by the staff that also admitted it smelled. The head housekeeper looked around, said it didn't smell and left. Of the families that we were acquainted with, the kids would not participate in the activities in that room.
Service and Staff

I was surprised at the lack of friendliness that there was on the ship. It wasn't an entire crew being unfriendly, it was just people doing their job, smiling when they felt they had to, and nothing more. Almost forced at times. You would see crew laughing and chatting up with each other, but rarely ever with passengers.

The jogging track goes around the pools not the ship. You weave your way around through people laying out or walking to their chairs. Difficult to run for any consistent distance. Pools close at 7 pm and are emptied. So do whirlpools. Water is unheated and unbelievably cold. Kept clean because of the fear of the norovirus but employees were openly hostile if you touched a railing they just cleaned.
Cabin / Stateroom

They kept the room neat and clean and it was wonderful. Our stateroom attendant wasn't one to be around or when she was, wasn't a people person like some of the others, but we always had the beds turned down, things folded, clean towels, etc.....
