relatively inexpensive, and gave us an opportunity to introduce some friends to
cruise vacations. We had not traveled on Celebrity before, but we had heard
good things. This was our seventh cruise; the others had been on Princess
and Holland America.
The ship was clean and well laid out. It is clearly an older vessel, but
it has been upgraded and did not feel run down. While the staff was
friendly, they did not seem to go that extra mile that we had experienced on other
cruises. I honestly do not know if this is indicative of Celebrity or if
it was the result of this being a short cruise prior to re-positioning.
The clerks in the shops, especially the jewelry shop, seemed preoccupied with
completing inventory instead of assisting customers. There may have been
a high number of new members of the crew, but one would think that a baby
cruise would be an opportunity to shine, inviting people to come back
again for a longer trip.
The service was okay. Our dining room waiter had a hard time remember who
at the table ordered what, and appetizers and main courses came in small
groupings making it hard to do the polite thing and wait for everyone to be
served verses having a cold meal. The food presented well, but was not a
spectacular culinary delight; some items were rather poor still frozen
shrimp in the shrimp cocktails as an example.
On this 3 Day cruise the buffet had two back to back Sushi nights. On
other cruises when there was a theme dining event there were at least
alternatives, such as a sandwich station or a burger bar. This was simply
all or nothing. That left us with the dining room. I love fixed dining,
but I like the option of the buffet on days when one has a late lunch because
of shore activities. That was not a viable option.
Room service had a variety of selections, and service was quick. However,
when it arrived is blah. I was excited to see chicken noodle soup as
a regular item for room service. In reality it was a weak broth with some
noodles and a few small pieces of chicken. A can of Campbells has more
Entertainment was good. There was nothing lacking in this area.
We had a Sunset Verandah stateroom at the rear of the ship. For a
stateroom it was roomy, especially with two adults and two teenagers (my
daughter was allowed to bring a friend). The mattresses in our traveling
companions Ocean view room were in need of replacement and sagged quite
noticeably. The room steward was prompt, introduced himself at the start of the
trip, and regularly cleaned up after us. There were no towel animals and
other little surprises, but it was only 3 Days. On other trips the room
stewards seemed to personalize the service, whether it was tucking in a
traveling stuff animal or fluffy your personal pillow there was something.
The youth programs we reported good. My daughter and her friend thought
some of the activities were lame they are tired of scavenger hunts, but
they stay occupied. Others in the group reported the kids were eager to
return to the youth center.
Overall it was an enjoyable experience. Everyone is excited about doing
another cruise. The new travelers little to compare it to, but were not
complaining. I have no qualms about traveling with Celebrity again, if the
itinerary is good and the price is right. However, if I have a choice,
Princess or Holland America would probably win out.
