Never Take A Celebrity Cruise

Sail Date: November 12, 2007

Reviewed: 8 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Suite

The Ship was old and worn. The crew was unenthusiastic. The shows were sophomoric. The food was less than mediocre except the afternon buffet which was excellent.

Pros: Hawaii was beautiful

Cons: The crew feigned sincerity about trying to make your experience enjoyable

Recommends Celebrity Mercury (RETIRED)? No.

Ship Quality
The ship was worn and dirty in spots. They always seemed to be fixing carpet, railings and elevators that made manoevering difficult; lots of creaks in the room.
Service and Staff
Any problems and concerns were not dealt with. We had to stand in line for long periods of time, it seems like others had problems too. The crew often asked how we were doing but did not listen to the answer and clearly did not care.
Cabin / Stateroom
The room was nice, we had a suite with a tub and balcony. Lots of creaking and banging making sleeping difficult. The rooms were not cleaned very well. The cleaning lady was much more concerned with getting her tip than cleaning the room.
Food and Dining
Except for the afternnon buffet the food was bland and stringy. The wait staff was more concerned about their tips than their service. Shows were not conveniently scheuled around dinner, sometimes before, sometimes after.
The Shows were perhaps the worst I have ever seen on any ship. My kids used to put on more professional shows in our living room. The dancers could absolutely not dance, sometimes fallng over each other. Only one of the singers could actually sing and one of the singers would have been on the 'Worst Of" on American Idol. The best show was when a Hawaiian consultant talked about the various Ports of Call. He was very good.
Hilo, Hawaii
The Volcano National Park was only about an hour's drive and very interesting. They had a rain forest area in the Park that was lush and beautiful. We did not have to walk very far to see the sights there. The entire area was green and lush and truly beautiful. If you only rent a car once this should be it.
Don't Miss: The active volcano.
Honolulu, Oahu
We live in Huntington Beach (Surf City) but when we visited the North Shore that really was magnificent surf and many surfers out on the huge waves. The views were spectacular. We also visited the Dole Plantation, my wife loves pineapple. That too was well worth the stop. We arrived in Honolulu on Thanksgiving, only one of three days Pearl Harbor was closed. We managed to squeeze it in before our flight but would have preferred more time
Don't Miss: Pearl Harbor
Lahaina, Maui
We always rent a car which I do not recommend for everyone but we drove around the Island and up to the National Park. Lahaina is a nice spot. The two beaches we visited were lovely and the water warm. The Tender was most inconvenient. Lots of pushing and shouting. The crew was not in control. Even though we were siupposed to have priority, the staff was rude and told us to wait in line with the others.
Don't Miss: Paia was a very quaint town into organic foods and earthy shops
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
The Parker Ranch was beatiful and we saw very interesting lava formations on our drive. The beaches were very well laid out and the parks cleam and green. The people were mostly friendly. We did travel an hour or so to try the Kona coffee but that was not worth the trip.
Don't Miss: Parker Ranch
