We have rebooked another Christmas with the Edge for 2020
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Embarkation was a breeze, but we were in Suite Class so it was especially easy. Go through the security area in T25 which was very quick and then have a coffee and pastry while you wait briefly for an agent to come sit with you and get checked in.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
We at primarily at Luminae which is the restaurant for Suite Class guests and it was terrific. There were, of course, a couple of misses (skip the escargot if offered) but overall the quality was 5 star. Always remember that they can give you steamed or grilled veggies any time and sauces can almost always come on the side. It's a great way to reduce calories. Also, the waiters were very intuitive about recommending dishes. We didn't eat in the MDR's and our only speciality restaurant this trip was Raw on 5. Generally very good quality of food, but I always feel it lacks atmosphere.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
To be honest, we didn't participate in too many. But there were plenty on offer to keep anyone busy. Loved the Q&A's with Captain Kate and the crew.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
This is always hard. Some of the stage shows were terrific and some were meh. Our favorites were Ashlie-Amber Harris (she's gonna be big someday) and the Undercover At The Club (contemporary swing dance show followed by whole audience dancing). Silent Disco is always fun and gets the whole ship in then party groove. There were a couple of mediocre to bad DJ's on the ship (and a couple of terrific ones). Overall we were entertained and the quality was generally good to excellent.
Children's Programs
No kids with us.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Service was absolutely perfect. Our waitstaff and sommelier in Luminae were just the best. I look forward to seeing some of the on Apex later in the year. Our butler and cabin steward kept everything impeccable and were available for any request. Our bartenders in The Retreat were humorous and poured a strong drink and were very outgoing and playful with all of the passengers.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
We absolutely love The Edge and The Edge Class ships coming on line. Everything was spotless and the modern design appeals to us very much. I think it might be too contemporary for some, but it's perfect for us and our aesthetic .
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
We had an S2 Suite. It's roomy, clean, contemporary and served us perfectly. We love the large shower/tub combo and especially like that the toilet is housed in a separate Water Closet within. The mirrors that slide open to the cabin and let you see outside are also a treat. Plenty of storage and more hangers than we can use (which is a rarity).
Ship tip
If at all possible book a suite class and enjoy all of the amenities which make you feel like your on a small yacht. Whenever possible go watch sunsets at The Sunset Bar on the back of the ship.
Actually Mahahual was pretty pleasant as a place to walk around. We found Nokoch Kay restaurant and beach club. Literally the freshest and best Ceviche I recall having in some time (5 types) and a decent, quick, beach massage. The "mall" that you are forced to walk through to escape the port is a bit of a chaotic, crowded mess and it's difficult to find an exit out. Once out though it is a very quick cab ride to the lighthouse and board walk that takes you into Mahahual.
Cozumel always seem to be a nice laid back port. We like to rent jeeps and drive around the island and maybe find a nice beach club. Water is beautiful there. However, this time, we met an old friend we hadn't seen in years who happened to be there on holiday the day we docked. There were 7 ships in port that day so it was pretty busy.
I honestly can't give this a good assessment. We went to swim with Stingrays and that was beautiful and fun, but mostly we stood in a line, sat in a bus in traffic, swam, and repeat. We had a pretty pricy lunch and went back to the ship. I'm sure Cayman has far more to offer than what we saw. I wish I could give more color.
We did self disembarkation. As suite guests we were walked off the ship by a concierge and were literally the first people off the ship.. We have Global Entry so we did a face scan and walked right out. I'd say less than 5 minutes.
