7 Night Exotic Western Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Sail Date: November 21, 2010 Ship: Carnival Valor Cabin Type: Balcony Traveled As: Family (older children) Reviewed: 7 years ago
The ship and its people were very nice. Our itinerary got changed suddenly when a passenger had a serious medical emergency and we had to skip Grand Cayman and get to Mexico to get him the care he needed. I was impressed by the care that demonstrated by the captain, and the poor staff who had to deal with the insensitive angry people trying to find a new shore excursion for Costa Maya. We were relaxing on a cruise... not at work. Just go with the flow.
This is the first time we booked shore excursions through an outside company, but I would highly recommend Island Marketing. Their prices were cheaper than through the cruise line and the money goes to support the local economy, which relies heavily on their tourists.
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
Food was pretty good mostly, but not great. We only ate in the formal dining room one night, and it took forever. Our kids ordered steak and were brought prime rib: Not the same! We didn't send it back because we didn't want it to take any longer. We dined at the buffet the rest of the time and it had basically the same food and service was faster.

Good variety of things to do. I enjoyed the trivia matches.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
All the staff was happy and smiling. They all seemed to enjoy their job.
We had to visit the doctor since our son came down with strep, and the doctor and nurses couldn't have been more nice to him.

The ship was very clean. The only thing that I didn't like was getting stuck in spots on certain floors or else having to cut through the formal dining rooms.
Cabin / Stateroom

We had a balcony room and it was a very nice size. We had four in our room and never felt cramped.
The only irritating thing was it was above the Ivanhoe Theater and there's not a lot of sound proofing if you're in the room. It can get very loud at some shows.
Belize had the friendliest people. The woman we bought breakfast from told us to come back after our excursion and she gave my sons a $2 Belize banknote. One of the best parts of the trip was talking to our guide on our way to the excursion and getting to know about his life there.
Don't Miss: cave tubing
Somehow we were the only ones who signed up for our time on our jeep tour, so we ended up with a private tour of the island. See the undeveloped east side of Cozumel! It's astoundingly beautiful. We went snorkeling, but there had been a storm two days before so it wasn't as perfectly clear as usual, but we still got to see nifty fish.
Don't Miss: jeep tour
Beautiful island! Our schedule changed so we didn't have as long as planned in Roatan, but everyone on the island worked hard to make sure we got our full excursion in and back to the ship on time.
Don't Miss: canopy zip line
