7 Night Exotic Western Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip)
Sail Date: April 05, 2009
Ship: Carnival Valor
Cabin Type: Inside
Traveled As: Couple

Our itinery changed between booking and cruise (Cozumel added to stops at Belize, Costa Maya & Progresso). Couldn't get into Progresso due to high winds & diverted to Key West which turned out to be our favorite port. To placate irritated passengers, they gave a $20 credit on onboard account. Some people spent it immediately; then shortly after they announced that we would go to Key west they took back the credit which put some people out. There were approximately 1500 children onboard. Many were not supervised well and were crowding hot tubs and elevators, and reunning or sitting on the stairs. Carnival continues to encourage proper dress in the dining rooms but doesn't enforce any real dress code. The dining room was also somewhat noisy. We asked for a table for two, but were placed a a large table near the center of the room. The overall dining experience has declined substantially in the formal dining rooms over the past dozen or so years. The informal dining rooms on the other hand has improved with better decor and food choices.

We miss the older ships that had a wrap-around promenade deck.

A lot of people are put-off by the reputation for crime & don't venture past the pier shops. Our conversation with a local seemed to confirm their fears. Nevertheless Belize City is interesting to kick around if you are aware of your surroundings and take reasonable precautions.
Don't Miss: Flea market just outside the pier (We didn't try Ambegris Caye)

Very relaxing. No beach but good pool. Spring breakers were grinding on the bar--not great for children or those easily offended.

San Miguelle is a funky city with lots of great shopping and atmosphere. Chankanaab Cove National park is a relaxing an beautiful spot to swim, snorkle or dive.
