Took Amtrak to New Orleans 1 night prior. French Quarter Fest was happening and it was very crowded. Lots of energy. Loved it. Four Points Sheraton on Bourbon Street via @ $84 a night was a steal.
For the cruise, I will start by saying that it is nearly impossible to not have a good time on an 8 day cruise to the Caribbean. We had a good time. That being said, I will talk about all of the little details Carnival neglected that add up to a cruise that is just not nearly as nice as those I have experienced on Royal, Norwegian or Princess.
When we arrived at the port we immediately asked for wheelchair assistance(we called and asked for assistance the day before we arrived). We were told none were available. We continually asked for wheelchair assistance but were denied at every stage of embarkation. People around us were asking employees if someone would assist us. No help. After an hour we received assistance from the employee that issued our room keys. We were about to board the vessel when he asked 1 of the 5 wheelchair assistants, that were sitting around with their feet up on seats, if they would help.
Waited on Lido deck until 2pm for room the be ready. Luggage arrived at 7pm.
Noticed the stench of sewage randomly on different floors at different times of the day.
Service is so far below par. Room stewards ask if you want morning or night service. No more twice a day service. Auto gratuities have increased though.
Friendly servers in MDR but they are so overwhelmed the service is basically nonexistent. Ordered drink on first night, never received. Ordered a glass of wine on second night, received 42 minutes later. Needless to say that I did not order another glass. Just try to get a refill of coffee with dessert. Ha.
Be ready to go to 3 or 4 drink stations to find one that works during lunch or dinner. Very poor design makes it extremely crowded around drink stations too.
A simple small margarita will cost $10.29 after included tip. Rather exorbitant for a small drink with little booze.
Open casino means you will choke on cigarette smoke if walking on 5th floor. Unfortunately, that is the main corridor to get to several lounges and bars.
2 comedians were very good, 2 were terrible. Really lacking in quality entertainment. Hypnotist does not qualify as entertainment to me. 2 good comedians during an 8 day cruise is not the quality entertainment I am accustomed to on a cruise.
Movies on lido deck were great. Just don't ask for popcorn between movies. The bartenders at Red Frog are the ones that dispense the popcorn and obviously hate that they have that responsibility. If you ask for popcorn before the movie starts, they will bite your head off and tell you they do not serve until the movie starts.
Dirty ship. Dirty tables not cleaned. Room service trays in hallways for hours. Drink glasses in elevators, on railings never being collected. Windows never washed. Obviously just short staffed.
No live music on Lido deck. Only a DJ.
Loved Blue Iguana burritos and tacos.
The guitarist, Jerry, playing in the Atrium was fantastic.
Fine cruise but not to the standards of other cruise lines

Look for the bartender Nenad in the Sports bar. Great bartender!
