Perhaps this is being naive\, but with only two cruises under my belt (both on the classier Holland America)\, I think I have a feeling of what gouging is. Two examples: As we entered the ship after a long day of traveling by plane\, we immediately went to the buffet before our room. As we sat down\, one of the crew members came around with a tray full of red drinks in a special glass. Said nothing more than would you like a drink. Thought it was a welcome aboard gesture by Carnival. WRONG. They asked for our room No. and the charge was $11.90 a drink. And every evening as we walked from our cabing in the front of the ship to the dining area in the back\, we passed all the shops. And each evening\, there were people outside some of the shops almost grabbing you and handing you coupons or trying to sell their wares. But the real king of nickel and dime came when we went to a free seminar by the spa staff on how to increase your metabolism. Turned out to be a shell for a detox program they were pushing and their products. My wife and I signed up after the seminar for a 45-minute detox class\, for $50\, thinking we were curious what our metabolism\, fat body weight\, lean body weight\, etc. were as they hook you up (finger and toe) to a laptop
and in less than 30 seconds you get a printout. They they try to sell you their products on the printout and their reccomendations (it would have cost us $1500 each for a year's treatment). But the REAL Coup de Grace came when we got our bill. There was the $50 charge for the 45-minute information class and printout\, which is OK\, but ALSO a $7.50 gratuity charge. It just seemed like Carnival was trying to get every ounce out of us and not being up front a lot of times. Nice ship\, nice crew\, decent food and presentation\, but quit keep putting your hand out and asking for more. Disappointed.
