Great cruise, leaving NYC was great

Sail Date: August 05, 2008

Room Type: Oceanview

My wife and I celebrated an anniversary by taking this cruise and it was a great vacation. The first 2 days at sea gave us time to relax, then 3 days in port were very active and then 2 more days to relax before going home. The ship is great, there's an adult only pool and hot-tub in the back of the boat (the hot tub is actually hot water and is not salt water like all the pools), there weren't any kids back there and it was a great spot to spend the days at sea.

The dining room has flexible seating, lots of tables for 2 or 4 or 6, not alot of big tables with multiple parties sitting at them. The food quality in the dining room wasn't as high as was expected, steaks were difficult to get correct and some of the options seemed odd for an upscale dining room (lasagna, enchiladas etc), but the formal night had lobster tails and there were several really good options, just not every day. Although the buffet was really good all the time, we didn't try the Supper club but we did hear it was fantastic.

The nightlife was great, we didnt have any kids so we were out every night, the sing along piano bar was a great spot as was the jazz club and dance club. Were else can you have dinner, see a show, go to a piano bar and then finish the night dancing.

Leaving NYC harbor is an absolute must, the views of Manhattand from the top deck were amazing and then the ship passes right by the Statue of Liberty and then squeezed under the Verrazano Narrows bridge. We got up early on arrival so we could take pictures of the sunrise over NYC.

Pros: great service, great ship, departing and arriving in NYC harbor, shows, nightlife

Cons: dining room food quality

Recommends Carnival Miracle? Yes!

Food and Dining
Dining room fed didn't meet our high expectations but was acceptable, the buffet restaurant was great though with lots of options, deserts are definitely the highlight.

Skip the midnight buffet festivale really not worth it.
Ship Quality
Ship was large for Carnival, the interior spaces were nicely done and not too over the top. There was always lots of empty spaces inside the ship and out on the decks.
Service and Staff
One word: outstanding! After 8 days you got to know your room steward, certain bar servers even Roger the pianist in the piano bar. Really a great expericence.
Cabin / Stateroom
We had a lowest level outside cabin (deck 1) the room size was great, King size bed with walkaround space, a couch, a chair, 3 closets and a dresser with drawers, we were able to unpack and the suitcases fit under the bed. Bathroom was small, but that's expected. The only down side was the dampness, the room and central air didn't have any exhaust ducts so the room tended to be damp all the time, but we survived.
Lots to do and see. Our first see day afternoon we ran into inclement weather so we spend alot of time indoors, and they had lots of activities going on for all ages. At night the ship really came alive and there were people all around at all hours.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Lots of history, the shopping was very commercialized with chains such as Coach, Del Sol, Gap, etc. It was very hot and being in a city there wasn't alot of ways to cool off. We wished there were more beach oppurtunities.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
Great stop, lots of shopping (altough mostly jewelry) and Magan's Bay beach was amazing. We want to go back and spend more time on the beaches.
Don't Miss: Beaches such as Magen's Bay or Trunk Bay
Grand Turk Island
There is nothing there at the dock or nearby, there is a beach, but its coral sand with lots of rocks and coral in the water so it not that pleasant to lay on the beach or swim. The tour center had some shopping and a Margarittiville bar/restaurant with a large pool. There were some local pick pockets around so we had to keep watching our stuff, otherwise it would have been more enjoyable.
