This was our first cruise ever. We had heard good things about Carnival and how good the food was from other family members who had cruised with Carnival multiple times. Wow, were we disappointed at mealtimes!
We learned the hard way that if we ordered something that was made-to-order such as a deli sandwich, omelette, pizza (the pizza was 5 stars!), or a dinner in the Prime Steakhouse (another 5 star experience but you pay an extra $35 per person for that meal), the food was good. However, the free food such as on the Lido was about the equivalent of what you'd get from a hospital or cheap buffet (you always recognize powdered eggs when you see and taste them). The Main Dining Room dinners were OK but the entrees seemed to have been cooked en masse, not to order. The chicken was rubbery and a couple of steak dishes were tough. My husband did enjoy an Italian entree one evening. The desserts looked rich and creamy but were not (think Jello no-bake cheesecake). Overall, I believe the cruise was catering to people looking for a bargain and Carnival achieved it by cutting the corners on the bulk of the food quality to keep their prices low.
The crew were wonderful and very friendly. No complaints there.
Beware the slippery floors in the Lido buffet areas if there's any hint of moisture on them from the constant mopping by the crew. We saw one man fall on the floor that was more like a skating rink. I was thankful to have made it through the week without a slip.
We may likely book another cruise with Carnival (it's cheaper--you get what you pay for) but will know what to avoid next time to improve our overall cruise experience.
