Good cruise overall, Great ship!

Sail Date: December 01, 2011

Traveled As: Family (young children)

Room Type: Oceanview

Our stateroom was good, and very quiet. Of course we did a lot of research to find a good room. We loved the amenities of the ship. The adults only Serenity area was a great place for adults to get away. The waterpark and ropes course along with the rest of the sports amenities were great for the kids. There is also a good variety of bars and restaurants choices for everyone. The entertainment staff did a good job also. We had some good comedians (not great, but good), and the magic show we had in the main theater was the best theater show I have seen on a cruise. (I wish I remembered the name of the show, but it was very visually dynamic) The only 2 main issues was this ship has a lot of motion compared to the previous 6 cruises we have taken. I don't think the stabilizers under the ship control motion as well as other ships, and perhaps this is due to the size of the ship. Also the vibrations and shaking that occurs on this ship when putting the engines in reverse were more dramatic than other ships we have been on. These were minor annoyances though and the ship was good overall.

Pros: The ship has many great amenities

Cons: Dining room service was slow; menu is not as good as previous cruises

Recommends Carnival Magic? Yes!

Food and Dining
Food was good, but there wasn't anywhere near as much variety of different style dishes as past cruises. We even noticed that the quality wasn't as good an another Carnival cruise we just took just 8 months earlier. On that cruise there were more nights where there were higher end items like lobster or shrimp cocktail available where this cruise had less of these higher end items available, and less often. I guess it's a sign of the economic times.
Entertainment
A couple of the comedians were pretty mediocre. Otherwise the rest of the entertainment was good.
Children's Programs
This was good overall. There was some issues with the 11-13 year old areas not being supervised very well. (kids doing and saying things that were way over the morality line while in presence of staff) Even during our orientation with the 11-13 year old staff they were playing a music video by Maroon 5 that displayed some pretty strong sexual content and borderline nudity that I don't want my child in that age bracket seeing.
Service and Staff
The dining room staff is overworked compared to other cruises. With a huge ship like this that is bound to be a problem. Carnival will need to work on this or it will cause long term problems.
Ship Quality
Very good layout for the ship that allows a wide audience of ages and tastes to find something they enjoy on this ship.
Cabin / Stateroom
We were very happy with our stateroom. We also spent a lot of time researching the variables that make a good stateroom before we booked the trip. You get out of something what you put into it. Do your homework on convenience, noise level, etc. when booking your room.
