Carnival Legend: A Great Cruise!

Sail Date: April 15, 2007

Reviewed: 6 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Inside

The layout of the ship makes for easy navigation: forward to aft and between decks. Never any trouble getting an elevator. Very tasteful decor, lots of ceramic tiles, mosaics, classical artwork, and deep, rich colors. This ship seemed to have more outside deck space than any I've sailed on (and this is my 15th cruise). The ship is very clean and very well maintained. Although there were 2,500 passengers, it rarely seemed crowded. Highlights: the plexiglass stairway to the reservations-only restaurant at the base of the funnel, the multi-level gym, the espresso bar on deck 2, and the beautiful interiors. (You'll see a lot of urns, but its not too much.) One odd thing: no deck chairs on the promenade deck - what a waste of space. We docked next to the Carnival Valor, which did have seating on the exterior promenade. This wouldn't prevent us from cruising again on the Legend or other ships in the Spirit-class. Debarkation: If you have an early flight, or just want to get off the ship ASAP, take adavantage of the self-assist debarkation - you carry your own luggage off. There was a huge line, but once it got started (around 8:00 a.m.) it moved very quickly. We were in a cab on the way to the airport by 8:10 - we had a 10:55 a.m. flight, but were able to change it and got home 2 hours earlier than originally scheduled.

Pros: Cabin, service, ship interiors

Cons: No deck chairs on exterior promenade

Recommends Carnival Legend? Yes!

Belize City, Belize
We did the Discover Scuba from a small island and did not go into Belize City or the big tourist sites on Caye Caulkner or Ambergis Caye.
George Town, Grand Cayman
It was too windy to tender into Grand Cayman at the regular anchorage near Georgetown. There was alternative anchorage that could acommodate 3 ships - unfortunately the Carnival Valor, Enchantment of the Seas and a Princess ship (Star or Grand) beat us to it, so we skipped Grand Cayman.
Don't Miss: 7 Mile Beach
Cozumel, Mexico
Any beach on Cozumel is good, but avoid the big beach clubs on the west side of the island if you don't like crowds - we went to Playa Palancar, a relatively quiet beach near the southern tip of the island. There is a restaurant and dive shop - we snorkeled on the reef which is about a 10 minute ride from the beach. We've been to Passion Island on previous trips to Cozumel and highly recommend it.
Don't Miss: Passion Island or rent a car and drive to the eastern side of the island for great beaches and no crowds.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico
This is our second time at Costa Maya and we went to the Mayan ruins at Chacchobben. These ruins are only 20% excavated and there is not much to look at compared to other sites. However, you can do the tour in about 4.5 hours and get back to the cruise ship port in time to do another activity. After Chacchoben, we made the mistake of going to the Tequila Beach Club which is near the village of Majahual. Avoid this club: too crowded and the beach/swimming is not great (imagine the ship's pools at 1:00 p.m. on a sea day). We ended up going back to the tourist village at the end of the pier and had a great afternoon.
