Our First Cruise Ever

Sail Date: February 01, 2014

Reviewed: 2 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Oceanview

While the cruise wasn't perfect, it was enjoyable and we will go again! We wish that we had done a bit more research of Nassau's attractions before boarding. While we planned an outing for ourselves in Key West (not one of the ship's excursions), we didn't plan one for Nassau, and we regretted not doing so. In retrospect we should have taxied out to Atlantis and gone to the beach.

Pros: Easy access to entertainment, food and the ocean breeze

Cons: Short time in port (though no shorter than other cruiselines offer)

Recommends Carnival Fascination? Yes!

Ship Quality
The ship is one of Carnival's smaller ones as I understand it, but as a result, we learned pretty quickly where everything was. We found all the public areas to be clean and in good condition.
Food and Dining
The quality of food was hit or miss. While food was never in short supply, we did find that the selections were sometimes great and sometimes not-so-great. For example, a chicken dish one day was perfect, but the next day was dry. Nothing was out-and-out bad, but we would have liked more consistency.

I loved that I could wake at noon and still have breakfast. I loved the "didja" (as in did you ever try...) appetizer option in the dining room each night. Since you can always order a back-up appetizer (or three) if you don't like what you're trying, you won't go hungry. I loved the "show" the waiters put on each night. We had a really good sport for a waiter and he made each evening a treat. I do wish that smoking had been prohibited in at least a few places. It seemed like no matter where we ate outside, there was a person smoking nearby.
Cabin / Stateroom
The stateroom was small but comfortable. We had portholes and I think that helped us feel as if the room were a bit bigger than it really was. The bathroom was a little worn around the edges, but clean.
Service and Staff
All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. They served without attitude or complaint and even encouraged us to be a little spoiled as we were on vacation. Our room smelled of cigarette smoke when we boarded, but a word to our attendant on our way out to enjoy the ship and it was smell-free by the time we returned that afternoon (and the smell didn't return).
We took advantage of the evening musical revues, the family-friendly stand-up comedy opportunities, the art auction (because we could), the ice carving exhibition, the towel animal folding class, and the family game nights. We were most pleased by the musical revues, the ice carving, towel animal class, and family game night. We liked but wouldn't go to the art auction again (it was educational, but long and we missed other activities we'd hoped to do because it went much longer than we thought it would - like 2 hours longer). We liked the male comedian act - he was pretty good at good clean comedy. The female act wasn't quite as good and she reused material at her only two family-friendly showings (which were not supposed to be repeat performances).
