Review Summary

We have been on a number of cruises with different cruise lines and three previous cruises with Carnival. Up to now, we have had excellent experiences with Carnival cruise lines - unfortunately, this ship, the Ecstasy was a dud. The cabin staff were very good but after leaving the cabin we were met with gloomy faces from the staff, nowhere to sit due to tables being left uncleared for half an hour or more and a selection of food comparable to a hospital cafeteria. It is typical for us to gain about 5lbs a piece while on a cruise - we actually lost weight! One day we decided to count the number of staff members who smiled at us because we were amazed at how miserable everyone looked - there were six smiles ALL DAY! The prime rib was very good as well as the baked ham, but outside of that, there was nothing to really write home about. Presentation of food was poor - we have been used to very attractive displays on previous cruises. A large bowl of tomatoes was about as inspired as it got on the Ecstasy. There are no 24 hour choices on food - unless you consider the options of a burger or pizza 'choices'. The general entertainment on deck was nowhere near what we have experienced on previous cruises - typically there are staff members hosting games, leading fun activities etc. most of the time - these were very few and far between on this cruise. The entertainment director needs coaching in diction - whenever a rare announcement was made about upcoming 'events', his speech as so sloppy it was darned near impossible to understand anything he said. I am going to give Carnival another chance because we have had such wonderful cruises with them in the past ~ If this were my first cruise, I seriously doubt that I'd be back.

Ship Experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Cafeteria food was poor quality and poorly presented. We did not get to eat in the dining room with 'anytime dining' because we were sent to wait in the library for a table with no idea of how long the wait would be. We opted for salad buffet rather than waiting. Doesn't anyone else get sick of cake for dessert every day? No imagination in the menu here.

Onboard Activities

Very limited on deck entertainment.

Children's Programs

Don't know

Service and Staff

Apart from the cabin staff, we questioned whether this was a 'training' ship or maybe even one you get sent to for punishment.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Cabin was very clean and funtional. Cabin staff were great.Staff were not very quick about fixing things that broke during the voyage - for example, the hand dryer in the ladies bathroom on the pool deck did not work for the entire voyage. I attenmpted to get frozen yoghurt oin several occasions, each time the machine was out of service.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Very nice - cabin staff were excellent

Ship Tip

If you want some peace and quiet - go to the adults only serenity deck - very nice.

The beach is just a short stroll from the ship (about 30 minutes) - walk to the end of the beach to the green buildings for some excellent sea food.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island) Did not visit port

Did not get to visit due to weather problems
