5 Night Eastern Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Sail Date: November 29, 2010 Ship: Carnival Destiny (RETIRED) 28 Cabin Type: Inside Traveled As: Family (young children) Reviewed: 7 years ago
Half of the staff were nice the other half were not so great. The ship is old and needs severe upgrades. There were some areas that were very dirty and I didn't see any crew cleaning the ship throughout the day versus when we sailed on Carnival Paradise last year, there were crew cleaning constantly throughout the day. There were certain areas of the ship that had some weird funky smells. The food was average - not that great. There was not sufficient entertainment. The ports were okay. We got off at Nassau and went on the discover Atlantis excursion which was average but not worth it for the money. This tour is not suitable for anyone that is in a wheelchair or babies in a stroller as there are stairs that you need to go up and down and there are no elevators... this was not specified in the shore excursions booklet and the staff didn't know much either. Overall the ship rocked a lot because of the waves and winds and we spend most of our time being sea sick. The hot tubs on board were not hot at all... all of them except one on the lido deck were cold. We complained to the staff and they did nothing about it.
Food and Dining

We were in the universal dining room and the food was okay on some days and good on other days. The variety did change everyday and they had some signature dishes that were on the menu everyday. There were not that many options for vegetarian diners.

We went to the evening entertainment shows. The talent show was okay... only 4 or 5 performers showed up and one of them was a disaster waiting to happen. There was a love quiz which was funny. The past cruisers event was okay... nothing fantastic except the watered down free cocktails. The other events through the ship were pretty standard, Bingo, ping pong and hairy chest competition. There was not enough seating for the comedy shows etc so we ended up standing in line for 45 mins and not getting in because it was too crowded. We went for one of the shows on the last day and the dancers were not coordinated at all and the singer had a terrible voice... I ended up falling asleep with many others snoring as well. In general there was not much to do.

My son enjoyed camp carnival, but the staff does not take note of specific directions. We told them that if our son cries, give him some water or give him his pacifier and blanket as he may want to go to sleep. They never followed our instructions and kept calling us as he was crying. So we would ask, did you give him his pacifier and they would say "yes" but he is still crying. When we would show up at the door 5 mins later, he would not have his pacifier, was not given any water and was not given his blanket. He enjoyed camp carnival during the day but in the evening for babysitting it was terrible.
Service and Staff

Some of the staff were fantastic. Especially the room steward, dining staff and medical staff. The staff at the shore excursion and guest services desk were very rude.

Average ship, not very clean, there are smells in some areas. The ship is not cleaned as often as others state. The layout is bad. We were in the universal dining room and had to go to another floor to go across the ship and then go back down to the level the dining room was on. The layout is not as shown when you book your room. The public areas were okay... the ship needs some upgrades in terms of decor.

We had an interior room on the lido deck. The room was okay, however not located as shown when we booked the room. We had to walk all the way to the end of the ship and then walk down the middle to access our room. Our room steward kept the room clean. As far as the amenities, I confirmed with a carnival rep what is provided and they stated, shampoo, body wash, lotion, tylenol, etc... all we were provided was with olay wipes and razors.... I don't know if that does much justice for anyone who relied on the amenities. The hair dryer is very low power and will take 30 mins to dry your hair.
