Review summary

At the end of the day a cruise is what you make of it. Despite being disappointed we still made lots of fun fun memories!

Pretty organized. Didn’t take long to get through security and on the ship. Everyone we encountered was friendly. Was difficult to find someone when we had questions about where to go

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

This was probably my biggest disappointment. I’m not picky nor am I hard to please. Most of the food was tasteless. Found hair in the butter. Hair on food counters. The dinner options in the main dining was very disappointing. We typically get excited to go to dinner. However, after reviewing the menu each evening, we only ended up going 3 times. I brought my niece who is a vegetarian and was promised there would be MANY options. Eggs and vegetables are NOT many options for a 14yo. And she could only eat so much grilled cheese and fries. I did some research and I noticed that Guys Burger offered veggie burgers. NOPE! We realized after 3 days the Deli offered them. However, when we went to order them they got irritated and said it would take 30min to make them! Seriously??? And they ran out of them Wednesday evening. There were some positives. The omelette stations were amazing (as long as you don’t mind long waits). The Blush restaurant for breakfast was very good. And they offered an excellent salad bar. I did appreciate the free room service offerings. However the last 3 days the quality was poor. The assorted cookies were always burnt. I want to add that the bubbles package is not worth it. I hated the fact that the kids had to go to a bar to get their drinks. And the wait time to get those drinks was forever. We didn’t get our moneys worth at all. I had 1 who got 3 drinks the whole week and another two who maybe did 5-6 times. Take note Carnival as to how Royal does theirs!!!

Onboard Activities

The evening shows for the most part was pretty good. We wasted a lot of money but had tons of fun with Brad at Bingo. We always look forward to Karaoke - but they offered VERY little. Hardly any entertainment out by the pool. My 2 youngest enjoyed their clubs and the water slides. VERY VERY disappointed by the size of the pools and the amount of chairs around them. Our first day at sea we were unable to find a place to sit. There were 3 adults who even searched the serenity deck. What’s most disappointing is that the staff allow fellow cruisers to just set an item on a chair ANYWHERE to save it and not use the chair for HOURS. They claim if it’s unused for 45 min the items will be removed. Not true. I’ve always enjoyed laying out at the pool. And was unable. I got up at 7:15 the last day at sea to get a chair. It should t be that way. Hot tubs were not warm. And there are no covered pools if it rains.

Entertainment

We did have lots of fun with Brad at Bingo. Leigh the CD was entertaining. Ryan was super fun. And was super nice to us all if we ran into him on the ship. The shows were entertaining- the violinists were amazing!!! The dj’s did a great job!

I had an 11 yo and a 14yo. My 11 yo is an experienced cruiser. This was my 14yo nieces first cruise. So they allowed my 11 yo to join my niece in her club. If I could do it over again I would have kept my 11yo with her age group. My 14yo made many fun friends and loved their club till mid week. The lady in charge apparently didn’t like her job. They found a closet in their club with tons of activities which were never offered. However they went to the club beside theirs and the director in their kindly took them in and they had tons of fun with her! I do love how kids make friends on cruises so easily and have the best time hanging out!

Service and Staff

Again one of my biggest disappointments. I had two rooms side by side (balcony rooms). They were not adjoining so we had different room stewards. The other room was taken care of extremely well! I can’t say one bad word about how the room was taken care of. However my room - May have been cleaned three times. Sheets weren’t changed. Garage hardly emptied (and if you’ve ever cruised you know how SUPER small the trash cans are). We had towels/washcloths/hand towels on the floor in our bathroom from Thursday till we disembarked. I called Friday for some new ones and was told that someone should be out in the hallway that I can ask. No one was out there but there was a cart. I did make sure every morning and evening to pick up our stuff so it would be easy to clean (I’m one of these people to clean my home before it gets cleaned!). I made sure to set out any trays, food, cups, drinks). I made sure clothes and other personal items were picked up. So this was disappointing. Typically the stewards are talkative and friendly. Mine was not. The one for the other room was though. And the wait staff at dinner...super nice and entertaining. Just always confused who was our wait staff. We would be treated by one. Another who would bring drinks. Another bread. Another to take our order. I’m used to one main waiter and an assistant waiter. So we never got to know our wait staff like we normally do.

Ship Quality

Can typically get our bearings by the second day. Pretty confusing layout. And I must add that the ship was fairly clean. The casino on this ship was the worst I’ve ever experienced. The smell of the smoke was just horrible. I typically like to play a game or 2 but there was NO way I could. I had to walk through it many times to get to where I needed to go. And was literally gagging. I saw many wearing masks. The smell followed out of the casino. You could smell it on the third floor by guest services.

Cabin / Stateroom

I did enjoy our balcony- and even though our rooms were not adjoined, they were able to open the door between our balconies. The size was good. Lots of space for us to unpack everything. Not pleased with the cleanliness, and you can refer to my comments above for that.

Ship tip

Get up early to save a deck chair because apparently you can save it with any type of item all day long without staff saying anything! Check out the menus before going to dinner in the evening. Definitely use their app! All the activities are listed throughout the day there as well as menus and where you can eat. It’s also a great way to stay in contact with friends and family who are on the ship. And it’s just a one time five dollar charge for their Internet service which again I can only be used for the app. Also you can see all of your photos through the app as well. Probably the best part of the whole cruise is their app!

Ports of call

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

We rented a private yacht which was pretty small however the best money ever spent! We were greeted with a beautiful continental breakfast. Then were taken to a private swimming area. We were served an amazing lunch that had appetizers which filled us up before main course was even served! We were then taken to another swimming area which we were able to do snorkeling at. Saw some huge huge turtles! Once back on the yacht we were given a beautiful and excellent dessert. Saint Thomas has never disappointed

San Juan, Puerto Rico

We chose the surfing excursion. Well the two younger girls dead and then the three adults chose the drive along option which most of the parents didn’t know about. If you choose to do the surfing excursion and don’t want to serve you only have to pay $30 and that’s for the shuttle bus there and back which is air-conditioned and a nice size! The kids did enjoy the surf lessons and we were right by a hotel which we were able to get food and drinks. We were not able to use the pool but those of us who didn’t take surf lessons did enjoy the beach

Grand Turk Island

Rented an air conditioned cabana! Best decision ever. I had a sick child who stayed in there. Pushed a button when we wanted to order food/drinks. Snorkeling was the best. A fellow cruiser brought some bread out and we saw some amazing fish! The Margaritaville pool was a lot of fun. When it was time to get back on board we waited in line a long time! Kinda frustrating

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

Although it rained we chose to go out. We found a pool with a restaurant and the kids had tons of fun swimming in it even while it was raining. I even swim in it with my clothes on! The food at the pool area was excellent as well as the wait staff. They also had to water slides at the kids loved

This was the biggest cluster F EVER!!! I’ve NEVER SEEN anything like it. And my fellow cruisers were saying the same. There were hardly any staff either helping out this disorganized mess!!!
