Review summary

I love cruising! This being our fourth (third with Carnival) I've come to expect certain things from Carnival that the Breeze just did not deliver.  At first i thought am i expecting too much?  Am i being a cruise snob lol... but then while chatting with another frequent cruiser in the laundry room I found that we shared the same issues.  I'll break down my review into the following categories: Staff/Service, Food and Entertainment/Activities,

STAFF & SERVICE:    One of the most memorable things about the cruise for me is the staff.  On past cruises, not a day went by where we didn't have a staff member ask us how we were doing or enjoying the day/ excursions etc. On this cruise it was more of a rare occurrence.  Aside from our steward and dining room waiter who took the time to chat with us, everyone else seemed to busy with their daily routine to even look up and say good morning.  I really missed that personal touch.  If you order a drink by the pool be prepared to wait at least half an hour or more.  There are times when we thought they had just forgotten to come back because it took so long.  They have also changed a policy that really didn't make much sense in my mind.  They no longer deliver the liquor purchased onboard or at port to your room the last night.  Now you have to wake up super early the day of disembarkation and go pick it up in one of the restaurants if purchased at port or at the liquor store if purchased onboard. I don't know who in corporate thought this was a great idea.  Where are you supposed to put this alcohol? Everyone is already packed as you are getting ready to get off the boat.  If you chose to have your luggage taken off the ship by Carnival all of your check in bags are waiting outside for you.  It just makes more sense to give people their liquor the night of as they used to so that they can properly pack it.  If you have a flight right after disembarkation as many do... you should not have to open up luggage outside in the street to accommodate your purchases.

FOOD:  This was my biggest disappointment.  I completely understand that they need to cater to masses and so i never judge based on seasoning/flavors of the food.  My complaint was with the actual availability of the different places. There is an illusion of a lot of variety and dining options but when you factor in the operating times of the places you were pretty much limited to Guy's burger Joint, Pizza and the Deli.  Why? Because the other places (The hot dog cart, Blue Iguana Cantina, Cucina del Capitano (the free pasta not paid dinner) and Fat Jimmy's BBQ had such restricting operating hours that you had to plan them into your schedule or you would miss them.  For example the BBQ place was only open from 12:30 - 3pm.  On port days this means you would completely miss this place unless you chose not to get off the boat.  On a sea days if you have a late breakfast this place would not be an option either.  I literally had to watch the clock and make a plan to experience this place.  Most of the included restaurants had this same time restriction.  You want free pasta? Ok but only between 12:00p and 2p... You want a taco sure... 12:30p to 4:00p. It was really annoying.  Guy's burger joint was open the longest from about 11-6 and was our default place to eat.  We had so many burgers and fries that i don't want to see another for at least a month!  There also seems to be more and more additional fee places than free.

Entertainment/Activities:  This is also an illusion.  When you look at the daily itinerary it seems like there was just so much to do!  However upon close inspection Its filled with a bunch of fluff and not real activities.  I love shopping but I don't consider a watch sale or t-shirt sale an activity.  Gone was also the fun competitions where carnival divides the cruisers into teams and all the competitions onboard give your team points.  This may seem cheesy to some but I'm competitive and so this was an incentive to participate in more of the onboard activities just so that my team would win.  On the positive side some of stuff was really nice.  The movies were a nice touch on this ship.  They had blockbusters like Avengers Age of Ultron showing which was nice to see on a big screen.  The waterworks is a definite hit with the kids.  We traveled with four ranging from 2-12 and they couldn't get enough of the slides, water hoses, big water bucket and overall splashing in this area.  It was also great that activities such as mini-golf were available 24 hrs.

Overall, my thought is perhaps the boat was just too big and they had to sacrifice some of the quality and personal touch.  I may consider cruising with Carnival again but definitely not on the Breeze.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

An illussion of variety. Too many time restrictions. A lot of lines.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The carnival works and outdoor movies were really fun.

Entertainment

Children's Programs

Service and Staff

Could have been better with the exception of our dining room waiters and room steward

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were really impressed that even with four of us in there we didnt feel cramped. If you can spring for it always get a balcony. It is really nice after waiting in so many lines to get to everything to have a little spot where you can enjoy the sea view all to youself.

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

5 out of 5

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

It was great that they docked at a decent port instead of a railroad track as they have in the past but overall this side of Jamica is just not very attractive.

George Town, Grand Cayman

5 out of 5
Bet Port by far... Leave yourself time to explore this area. Visit Margaritaville. They have a pool and slide and you dont have to purchase anything to use it.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Beautiful Port. Look around many shops sell the exact same things but the prices really differ.

I understand the reviewer's concerns with the food options, alcohol, etc. From my perspective, there are plenty of options available around my schedule. The Sunshine was much the same when we sailed this past January. We were always able to find something satisfying to eat if our schedule didn't accommodate our preferred meal. The food was never an issue for my family. If I were a drinker, I think the alcohol business would be more of a concern for me than the food selection.

the ones of you complain about the food....did you eat in the dining room?

I thought she gave a good review with the good and bad. She shouldn't be knocked because she gave her honest opinion, which is what this website is for.

I think the original posters is being judged too harshly. They said that they had cruised with Carnival before and were used to a different standard. The person gave pluses and minuses. The times that different food stations are open has been a common complaint and is justified. Carnival should be aware of this and look at making changes. I have found this to be a problem on all cruise ships. It does seem odd to get your alcohol after they have already taken your bags. I don't think the problem was getting the alcohol himself, but the timing of it. It sounds like they still enjoyed the cruise, but just gave an honest critique. I will be going on the Breeze for the first time and hope it is great. I have only sailed with Carnival once before on the Sunshine. We had a blast, yet it wasn't perfect. But you know the saying: Any day on a cruise is better than the worst day at work.

I've been on Breeze on my last 2 cruises. Never had a problem with crew friendliness - & I will talk their ears off. Food sometimes is limited I'll give you that and the BBQ is only sea days & the line is very long, but I never went hungry.

DFromATX    8 years ago

Agreed. We are a family of 6. We need 2 rooms and I like balconies. No way could we afford to go on another line. I've priced Royal and it's quite a bit higher. My boss cruises Norwegian... Must be nice lol but he claims its "uppity" and not as much fun. He might be just saying that tho lol.

7 cruises in 5 years for me and 3 in a row on the Breeze, all fantastic. Life, and cruising, is what YOU make it.

TeresaC1963    9 years ago

Personally, I'm thankful that Carnival chose #2. As LadyCreole said, there are other lines that cater to the upper crust. A cruise is what you make it. I choose to appreciate what I am getting and not worry so much about what I'm not.

TeresaC1963    9 years ago

Ask. One of the reasons cruising is changing so much is cost. With the cost of everything rising since cruising became popular in the late 70's and 80's (thanks to the Love Boat lol), cruise lines had 2 choices: 1) continue raising prices to the point only the upper 1% could afford to cruise or 2) make cutbacks to keep costs so every day Joes could afford to cruise.

askoleern    9 years ago

As people don't realize is cruiseing is changing just ask an old timer. When we had our first cruise over 30 years ago it was pamper the guest now there are so many doing it,they lack some personal touches..You really had a great review

ladycreole    9 years ago

Yeah I really think that the reviewer is a Cruise Snob, just as I am a Food SNOB but I will never ever complain about the food while I'm on a cruise ship for what other options do you have but to say while in the middle of the ocean so I'm just grateful for each and every meal I receive on their for there are some people in the world who can't even afford to cruise and even get a cabin in the most cheapest cabin on board. So if I want great food I know where to go when I'm on land but trust and believe I will never ever ever complain about being on a cruise whatsoever for its better than being at work dealing with crazy coworkers, bosses, and just working period. That's my time to totally relax and not have a care in the world and be in the middle of the ocean floating and casting all my cares away. Maybe they should cruise Celebrity Cruise Line talk about being stuffy, snotty, uppity and snobby that would be the perfect cruise for them. On that cruise line they can expect no fun at all, all the great gourmet food they wanna eat all day and night so they can never miss a meal. They will have their own Butler in their room at their every beck and call so that no small attention to detail will be missed and I think with all this being said I have found the very most perfect cruise ship for them. So please give Celebrity Cruise Line a try and I would love to hear your perfect cruise experience review. LOL!!!!!!!!

Sometimes it sounds like that is what people do cruisemia. I know my last cruise wasn't perfect and I do recall there minor things I wasn't happy with but here it is 6 months later and I really don't remember what they were. All I remember is the fun I had, the great service I received and my great vacation. You'll always have a better time if you focus on the positive. 😎🚢⚓️🛳😀

cruisemia    9 years ago

Wow! It sounds like a horrible vacation. Next time I'll make sure to walk around the Breeze with a notepad to write about the terrible experience.

TeresaC1963    9 years ago

Well said Coltsfan. But what else would I expect from a Colts fan? Lol

I'm sailing the Breeze for the 4th time come March if that tells you anything. Great ship ! The staff works very long hrs for peanuts and doesn't bother me a bit if they are super excited all the time. You missed a meal , they didn't say hello , I had to go get my alcohol that I bought . Idk maybe it's just me but their was not 1 thing in this review to justify that rating in my opinion. Cruise and have fun and STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF ......

DFromATX    9 years ago

I've cruised on the magic twice and we were wanting to either try a different ship or even another cruise line, so we are pretty excited about the breeze coming to Texas. But... I have read a lot of reviews about those food restrictions. We like to eat at your ordinary times so it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I wonder if it's just the breeze or company wide???

VonChillis    9 years ago

We just got back on 11/15 and this was the best cruise my wife and I have been on yet. The food options on the Breeze are amazing. We tried most of them but missed the Tendor and Italian restaurant. Ate at the stake house as well and was very happy. My wife was pampered by her cabana boy (me) all week with the specialty made omelette that I brought back every morning to the room.

TeresaC1963    9 years ago

Sorry that I missed the sarcasm. As I re-read I should have caught that. Lol. Enjoy your cruise.

ladycreole    9 years ago

Exactly I was really being sarcastic. No matter what I always make the best of all cruises, I'm just glad be able to cruise. I'm still going on the cruise and many more.

TeresaC1963    9 years ago

Lady. If you're going to let negative reviews pre form your opinion without waiting and judging for yourself then you are going to be upset. Read down this thread and through so many other reviews today alone and see how much positive there is being said. You've been on enough cruises it would seem to know that each cruise is what you make it. Don't let someone else's bad time spoil yours.

ladycreole    9 years ago

I'm almost scared to go on the Breeze NOW next year for I've heard so many bad reviews on the food on there. And this solidifies it for me now. It's too late for me to cancel. DANG!!! I guess there is no perfect cruise. I've been on 4 Carnival Cruises abs they were all great and yes some food was hit or mess but I still made the best of it. I guess I'll be eating salad, pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs on The Breeze GEESH!!! 😢😯😐😕😳😵😒

revgeorge    9 years ago

We were on the Breeze last month and found nothing really wrong. The steward always called us by name and as we walked the ship were always answering good morning or evening depending on the time of day. we had no issues with food. I have always found that there is always something to complain about if you look hard enough. I am a person who likes things clean and I would check areas for dust that only a few would think of and I came up clean every time

jburns0228    9 years ago

very good review. I believe that your points are well considered and valid, without being too indignant. These will be points to reflect on when I sail on the Breeze in February.

mustang89    9 years ago

we cruised the Magic in July kinda felt the same over all, staff seemed overly busy to say "hi" food places seemed rushed and drinks took forever to get. Also seems they where pushing items to buy down your throat. hopefully it was just the time of year. been on 3 other carnival Cruises and never had a bad one

perrywalden3    9 years ago

I just got off the Breeze and we had a great time. Yes, some of the food venues do have limited hours but there were still many choices. Oh, and the BBQ is only on sea days, not port days. We loved the movies as well. This was my 13th cruise with Carnival and while I have seen many changes over the years, I would rank this one in my top 3. We all have different opinions and mine is just different.
