Ship: Brilliance of the Seas Reviewed: 7 years ago
The ship is beautiful. Embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth. We stayed in a family stateroom in the front of the ship. It was very large with a small, separate sleeping area for the children and two forward facing windows, which were large. The bathroom was adequate, though the shower was miniscule, making retrieval of a dropped bar of soap difficult.Room attendants were excellent. Because of the front location the noise may have been slightly increased. The food, overall, was good though slightly below the quality of Princess or Celebrity.Room service and dining room service were excellent. The drinking water often had a terrible taste as water was taken aboard at each port.Unfortunately, the main dining room is not large enough to accommodate all. We second class citizens were assigned to a very small dining area where we were unable to see a lot of the action. This certainly was not what we paid for.Unfortunately, a large number of people (possibly as high as 25%), including myself, came down with severe gastrointestinal symptoms possibly due to the food or water. The gym/spa had a large number of machines. The staff did not seem to keep on top of their working condition. Additionally, there are no water coolers, fans or television.Children under 16 cannot use the equipment at all, an amazing fact since children much younger than this can climb the 33-foot climbing wall!Attentiveness to problems was not up to par. It took four calls to get a problem with my cabin toilet taken care of.The kids' program appeared below average and poorly organized. The activities did not really attract the kids. Additionally, there were times when the staff didn't show. Our cruise was to the British Isles and Norway. The ports of call were selected well, but unfortunately, were sometimes a good distance from excursion destinations. There was a wide range of ages, though there probably were less children than on a Caribbean cruise. There were a lot of smokers on our ship. The staff did little to enforce the non-smoking areas. I frequently saw smokers using regular waste bins for ashes increasing the risk for an inadvertent fire. The overall "ride" of the ship appeared less smooth to myself and others though this may have been a function of the itinerary.Despite the problems, we did have a wonderful trip. The ship clearly has a lot of potential, but has a ways to go before it rivals Princess or Celebrity.
