Holland America is a class cruise line.  Everything is done well.  Entertainment is top notch.  Food is well done.  Service is very good in all areas.  All in all, if you want to feel special try Holland America Line.

Excellent Cruise even for the first time cruiser by vincentatkins

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

This was my first major cruise as well as my first visit to Alaska.  I opted for a cabin with an ocean view and that would take me through the Tracy Arm fjord. The entire cruising experience was a rewarding one sand was well worth the expense.  The range of activities on board ship as well the range of dining facilities meant that there was always something to do along with excellent dining.  The staff on Holland America all proved to me friendly and helpful and the cabin as well as vessel itself was clean. My only disappointment was the high cost of internet services - which turned out to be a benefit because I spent less time on-line and more time enjoying other activities. The ground excursions added much value to the cruising experience and , coming from the Caribbean, the visit to the glaciers and through Tracy Arm fjord was quite an enthralling one for me. All in all I had no regrets and already I am thinking of my next cruise.

First Cruise and won't be the last! by JohnBelk

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

This cruise was excellent from start to finish.  The Amsterdam is well maintained.  Our room was actually larger than expected.  Beds were comfortable.  The room attendant was very good.  The entire staff on board was very nice and also very efficient.  Getting on and off the ship at all ports was a very smooth, organized process with little waiting.  The food couldn't have been better.  Great menu options in main dining room and lido deck restaurant  Never went hungry for a minute.  Great Alaskan Cruise!!!

Great Value by genesmith2206

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The shipboard experience on the Amsterdam was tremendous. The staff was wonderful, food was great and plentiful, great variety. The stewards were very accommodating. The excursions were great except I didn't get to see the crab boat and have that experience. The Victoria excursion was misleading. My wife and I were under the impression that the Butchart Gardens were included. When we got there we were surprised to find out that it was NOT, to a great disappointment. Other than that, it was great.

A multi-generational itinerary, but not multi-gen entertainment by kelleypicasso

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We are a mid-40's couple who took this cruise with our two daughters aged 8 and 10 and our 84 yr old parents. It's our second cruise with HAL and my in-laws are 3 star Mariners. The Alaska itinerary had many other families of similar make-up but the entertainment in the evening could have been dialed in a bit better to reflect the larger number of 30-50 yr olds who finally have some childcare and would like to loosen up a bit. The ship is clean, but showing some age, especially in tiled areas (showers, floors, spa). We saw lots of whales during this trip without having to book a whale watching tour!

Expected to be able to give a much higher review. by lmlmccall

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Pros: Our room, although dated, was immaculate. All staff were always available and gave 110%. Room service was timely and the food was good, even though portions were small. The ship is well designed, with good signage, and small enough that it would be hard to get lost. It was a perfect trip to rest. Cons: We have heard many times over the years that Holland America has the best food, and booked the line specifically for that reason. The buffet mostly offered standard, basic American food, which was not kept sufficiently warm on the steam table to still be warm, even on the heated plate, by the time you got to a table. We did not go to the main dining room, but heard from other passengers that the food was good and desserts weren't anything special, which leads us to believe the were the same offered at the buffet. The worst problem was the intense vibration every time the ship cruised at 21 knots or more. This was our 4th cruise (2nd to Alaska), and have never had this issue before. Amsterdam was to make one more run to Alaska and then head over to the Mediterranean. Hope nobody booked a trip on that relocation run.

Cruise was good but could have been better... by nyc125

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

This was a scenic cruise with good food.  The cabin steward and crew over all were excellent.  The in room breakfast menu was EXCELLENT with a timely delivery.  It was easy to embark, disembarking and shore excursions were well organized.  Getting to Pier 91 where our ship the Amsterdam was docked was easy.  There was one negative thing that we encountered with our cruise.  On the first day of our cruise I took a ten minute shower and when I pulled back the curtain I discovered that the bathroom floor was flooded.  The shower drain was not working properly.  I used all the towels and washcloths in the bathroom to soak up as much water as I could.  I called the front office and they said they would send someone to fix the drain.  Someone did come and when they left they said something in which I was not able to understand what he said so I thought the drain was fixed.  However the next day when the water in the shower started to rise I knew it wasn't fixed.  All I can figure out is that the drain could not be fixed and there were no other rooms available to switch us to.  Actually we never received any phone calls either to see if the problem was resolved. Since we were not able to test the water temperature we had to turn it down low.  We had to shower in about 2 minutes otherwise the bathroom would flood again.  Taking cold showers caused us to lower our resistance and when the 1st virus  walked past us and then decided to latch on we both became very sick with a respiratory virus.  The room steward replaced all our towels and washcloths when the floor flooded the first day of our cruise.  If it wasn't for that I could easily say we would cruise on Holland America again.  However, since the drain was never fixed and we both became sick I am not sure I would travel on this Cruiseline again.

Whales and eagles and bears...Oh My! by mlkittsjg

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Just back from the most fabulous cruise ever to the prettiest, most pristine part of the world with breathtaking views and scenery...Alaska!  The Amsterdam was more than accommodating with excellent customer service and 5 star dining experiences in the dining room.  The cabins were great and there were plenty of activities throughout the day when not exploring the beautiful ports.  The ship is a perfect size and there were no long waits or lines while disembarking etc.

Escape the summer heat of the lower 48. by wamocompanies

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Summer cruising in Alaska is the perfect solution for relaxation and escaping the summer heat of southern California.   Be aware that even on HAL there will be more children than usual.  Adult supervision will be minimal.  We had a great time in spite of the challenges.

Amsterdam review by kleinhouse

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

From the moment we stepped aboard the Amsterdam to the moment

we stepped off, we were thoroughly amazed at the wonderful things

that happened. From the outstanding food to the great cabins we

were very satisfied. The crew did their very best to accommodate our

every need. The room stewards were especially thorough and efficient.

I especially liked the fact we did not have to put money in individual

envelopes for various crew members as we were requested to do in

previous cruises with other companies, including a River Cruise in

Europe.  Holland America is the greatest  and I will recommend this

line to all my friends asking about Inside Passage Cruises.  Thanks

again.

Amsterdam Alaska Cruise by mwag1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Somewhat disappointed in the quality of entertainment and dinner food. Ship decor a bit tacky, and cabin tight, could have used more outlets, charging spaces, TV selection. But Alaskan scenery quite beautiful and worth seeing.

Great first cruise by schmidtlinda5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Fun experience. For a first time cruiser, I enjoyed waking up at a new destination each day. Food excellent, service excellent. Experiencing the glacier in the fjord was a highlight. No seasickness although when we were on open sea it was noticeable compared to between islands.

Alaska Cruise by Anne643

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)

Overall very good experience. Scenery outstanding. The wifi is an issue- expensive and PAINFULLY slow so you have to keep buying more because everything takes so long. If they want people with jobs or teenagers to cruise, they NEED wifi. Teenagers in my family said they would slit their wrists before getting on a ship again because of it!

Not given what we were promised by leekriger

We took the cruise because we were promiised that my husband's scooter would be taken to the tender, etc so we could see Sitka.  The only reason for going on the cruise was to see Sitka.  Holland America did not provide us use of the scooter so we were unable to go to Sitka!!!

My Amsterdam cruise by howell395

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

If you are in a wheel chair, there is a lot of can't do's.  You cant use the veranda.  You can't get to outside bow viewing places.  You can't do any of the off board excursions.  You can't get off at the anchored destinations.  But being aboard the ship and doing all it has to offer was excellent time for me.  The crew are beyond helpful and nice.  The dinning was perfect in every way.Big Smile

We really enjoyed our Alaska cruise on Holland America on 6/31/15. Our cabin, the staff, the crew and the entertainment were all excellent.

This was 100% better than our previous cruise to Bermuda on the NCL Dawn last fall.

I should have known, but I didn't listen to myself! by sonoranbreeze

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Amsterdam / Destination: U.S. - Pacific, Northwest

I booked this 3 night Pacific Coastal Northbound Cruise and had the forethought to call my doc and get my prescription for sea sickness, Antivert.  I've cruised 4 times previous to this and knew it worked for me.  The pre-registration, boarding and room assignment were absolutely flawless.  The ship, although dated, was immaculate.  The sanitary precautions were spot on, no self service buffet, no condiments, salt and pepper shakers on the tables.  We were pleased to see such caution.  I felt the motion on the first day but it was more than bearable.  Just little rises and falls to the stomach. I didn't bother to take my antivert.  Day 2 a little more nauseous and a trip to the ship's doc for a different issue.  Didn't feel great but didn't slow down.  Ate in the main dining room both nights, service was not great, food choices minimal, but tasty

.  The dirty table next to us when we were seated was still dirty when we left.  The server was spotty and not at all interested in chatting it up or being sociable.  I ate bland food both nights, by choice due to my tummy roiling.  Still too stupid and stubborn to take the antivert.  We greatly enjoyed the ship entertainment, the piano bar and the crow's nest late night DJ and dancing.  Day 3 at sea and I was seriously not feeling well, still not smart enough to take the antivert.  Went to the napkin folding class and mixology class while hubby played poker.  Nice fun atmosphere at both.  One drink in and I was flat out sick.  Trying to hold on and not be.  Got dressed for dinner and didn't even make it into the diningroom.  Hubby ate alone and I got sick 4 times in the ladies room before heading quickly to our stateroom.  Was sick and throwing up the rest of the time.  Even sick I know the ship was a fun experience and some old time cruising instead of the drunken frolics of a Carnival Cruise.  By the time I decided to use the antivert I couldn't keep it down.  As I said, too stupid to take it.  I will probably never cruise again, but it has nothing to do with Holland America, which was, by far the best run ship we've ever been on and the best entertainment, and social areas and venues.  Holland America has cruising down, they have it all figured out re embarkation and disembarkation.  Can't praise them enough!
