I always thought of HAL as a line for older folks. Now that I've cruised with them, I know that they are a cruise line for all ages. As a single Mom with kids, I always felt comfortable.

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Special events such as the outdoor salmon bake on the Lido deck were fantastic! The main dining room had well-prepared food, although portions were small. Lido restraunt was generous. The Indonesian items were a real treat.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The mostly Indonesian crew put on a show for the passengers one night (singing, music and native dances). It was really nice to be able to share their culture. Otherwise, the entertainment at night was unexciting.

Children's Programs

1 out of 5
Youth counselors didn't have good rapport with teens. Teen made their own fun, but spent little time in the Loft or Oasis.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff (both officers & crew) were very personable. They were attentive but not intrusive. teenagers adored their Waiter, Asst. Waiter, & Cabin Steward. One night, well after midnight, our Asst. Waiter - who was off duty - ran into my 14 year old girls on deck. They were trying to stay up all night. He fixed them each a cup of hot cocoa so they would get sleepy & return to their cabin (he has a 14 year old, too).

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It only took a day to be able to navigate from one location to another. The ship is small enough that you can actually run into people you've met before, and it's not so big that you need to leave 30 min. early to get to a location on time. The ship was very clean. Fresh flowers were abundant (staterooms, room service trays, public areas).

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We were in a handicapped accessible room, so it was larger than most. Beds are REALLY comfortable. Nice linens. Excellent climate contol. DVDs were a nice bonus.

Pros: The crew was very warm, thoughtful, and fun.

Cons: Unable to see a glacier while cruising Tracy Arm (too many ice flows).

Recommends Amsterdam? Yes!
