Great Cruise - Great Ship

Sail Date: July 02, 2006

Reviewed: 10 years ago

Traveled As: Couple

Room Type: Oceanview

The Amsterdam is a beautiful ship. The public rooms are filled with comfortable seating and a variety of styles to fit every mood and every taste. I especially liked the large comfortable leather furniture and picture windows in the library/internet room. There was also a wonderful speciality coffee and snack bar there. The Crows Nest offered a spectacular view and was our favorite place to meet friends before dinner for a cocktail or late evening for dancing and after dinner drinks. Other areas offered a variety of music and entertainment choices. Although the ship was filled to capacity, we never felt crowded and were almost always able to find a table or lounge chair in the area we wanted.

Pros: The itinerary and the food

Cons: Too little cruising time

Food and Dining
Without doubt the best cruise line food we've ever had. The dining room is lovely, has good acoustics, and our oval shaped table for eight was perfect for conversation and being able to hear each other. The wait staff was outstanding.
Ship Quality
This ship deserves its 5 star rating!
Entertainment
Quality of the entertainment was mediocre. This cruise is so port intensive we found that many cruisers were too tired to attend the shows - especially the late seating diners whose entertainment began at 10:30 PM.
The culinary class was really outstanding.
Service and Staff
The stateroom, wait staff and front office were fabulous. They knew our names after the first day and had our schedule down perfectly so our stateroom was always cleaned and ready for us when we returned from breakfast. The dinner waiter had any wine we didn't finish from the previous night at the right place at our table the next night. The front office folks knew our name after just one inquiry about storage of insulin medication that needed to be refrigerated. They were great - had a small refrigerator put in our stateroom. There could have been more wait staff in the public areas (not including the dining rooms which were fine). We usually ended up going to the bar ourselves to get drinks around the pool and in some of the other bars. Service in the Crows Nest was excellent.
Cabin / Stateroom
Our stateroom was on a par with other cruise ships we've been on. The storage area was very good and the bathroom a bit larger than some we've been on.
Stockholm, Sweden
Beautifully maintained old city with lots of parks and pedestrian areas. Nice boat tours of islands
Visby, Sweden
Nice rural feeling. Walk up to the open air market and old church ruins to get a feel for what life has been like there for centuries. Lovely countryside
Helsinki, Finland
Nice, modern city with beautiful setting on the water. Very clean and energetic. Kind of expensive. We spoke to a local young man who was meeting some friends who were taking a ferry to Tallin to have a bachelor party for one of them because it was so much cheaper to party in Tallinn than in Helsinki
St. Petersburg, Russian Federation
There is so much to see it can hardly be covered in the 2 days you're here. We took a 2 day DenRus tour and were very impressed with the quality of the guide and the program. She was incredibly knowledgeable and knew how to get around the crowds. Our tour included lunch both days and both were very nice. If you haven't been to this port before, be sure to book a tour in advance.
Don't Miss: Take a 2 day tour if you haven't been here before
Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany
If you don't go to Berlin, there's a train or tour boat you can take from the ship to Rotstok for good shopping in a nice old pedestrian only part of town or you can go to the beach in Warnemunde where there are good tourist amenities.
Tallinn, Estonia
We took the "hop on/hop off" tour bus all the way around one time then rode it back to the old upper city. Great views, lots of history, nice walk down to the lower city
