Disappointing Suite Service!

Four of us booked two Owners' Suites for the San Juan sailing of November 26, 2006. (Seven Days, Southern Caribbean). We were expecting service that would at least be similar to the service we'd received with Holland America in their Suite categories in the past.

We were very disappointed. For $4,100 per couple, in the second largest suite category on the ship, we expected some degree of incrementally better service. (After all, they "suggest" daily tips that are 50% higher than those for regular staterooms.)

We received mostly poor service. Stateroom attendants were finished "cleaning" our suite in less than 10 minutes. Sheets were not changed, beds were barely smoothed out. Toiletries were not replaced, and surfaces were not even dusted, let alone actually cleaned.

HAL offers much better Suite service, including such amenities as free dry cleaning and laundry. Not RCCL.

The Concierge Lounge was a joke compared to Holland, with no food and rarely fresh coffee. The last morning of the cruise, when we were forced out of our rooms at the same time as all other stateroom guests, we were told that we could wait in the Concierge Lounge, but it was locked and our key cards no longer unlocked it.

Most disappointing, the disembarkation, which for 3,000 people, most of whom do not follow any of the rules about de-boarding order or not blocking public halls, was a catastrophe. Almost an hour of lining up, pushing, jostling and claustrophobia, and Owner's Suite guests weren't given any kind of disembarkation priority.

If you want a good Suite experience try a cruise line other than RCCL!

Pros: Food, Health Club, Ship Facilities and Decor

Cons: Service, Casino, Cleanliness

Food and Dining
The food improved dramatically later in the cruise. The one specialty restaurant, Portofino's, was good but not great, not worth an additional $40 per couple. Holland's specialty steakhouse is far better, and both Princess and Norwegian offer many more specialty choices than RCCL.
Ship Quality
The ship was beautiful, albeit not as clean as it could have been.
Cabin / Stateroom
Size of the Owner's Suite, at 506 sf inside, plus balcony, is GREAT. Nice layout also. Daily cleaning and upkeep not very good.
Service and Staff
Some were fantastic -- friendly, eager to please -- particularly in the dining room. The stateroom staff were mostly bored or unpleasant.
Entertainment
We like the casino and usually go there each night after dinner. This ship's casino was barely above average, and there was NO attempt to attract our business or keep us playing and happy, despite repeated complaints by the casino staff that it was the slowest series of nights all year for them.
