NCL = Norwegian cruise line. I love the shovel and go nature of the buffet (windjammer) because I could be in and out in 13 minutes flat, no collared shirt required... But my better half is in love with meals that take more than an hour and require dressing up... Ugh!

mollyjayne   Dec 04, 2016 - 10:14 pm

Aaron, what is NCL. Where did you go with them? And, oh, btw, if you go on another RCCL cruise, you should totally go to the Windjammer for dinner at least one night. It is less peopled, quiet, beautiful window view, and the food was great... in fact I couldn't make up my mind and had a triple layer multinational dinner one night (it is so obvious why most people gain 5-15 lbs per week on a cruise). Best part of dinner in the Windjammer, tho', was ice cream served up in the quantity you request from 1 or both of vanilla and another featured flavor with assorted toppings to add yourself.

Only big food disappointment was the pineapple but I think that was a seasonal issue, not theirs. On the flip side, I usually find watermelon very boring, but it was super yummy. The biscuits with sausage gravy was tasty... actually had flavor, not just peppered to death. They also did a great job with the sautéed onions (served up by the burgers but I ate them as a side dish) and with their mushrooms (usually near rice).

Outside of Windjammer, I must mention a starter and entree

Wow I was on this cruise and loved it. Windjammer food wasn't bad for the buffet. Better than NCL for sure. I did not get sick. We mostly ate in the dining room for dinners though. The woman loves formal dining. We had some rough seas due to the weather, maybe that had something to do with it? I was really glad to have my sea sick pills and ginger candy on that last leg from Cozumel to Galveston.

I suppose it is tough to get past 1st impressions, but I wouldn't judge RCCL by one cruise. I can't say I enjoyed this one quite as much as our 1st when it comes to the food overall. However, I wouldn't be too quick to assume it was food at the Windjammer that made you ill. It MAY have been coincidence... do a search on food poisoning on Mayo Clinic's website. I found it very enlightening.

Also, I know if you felt ill, it probably put a real damper on your impression of everything. (I actually started out the cruise with a bad cold.) However, I have never met a cruise line as flexible and conscientious. They were fabulous with our son and the group of Autistic children we were traveling with. As well, when I felt very ill one evening (not from the food but likely from dehydration), they gave me a free warm clear soda to help settle my tummy, had someone come check on me 2x, and offered to take an order to bring me some food when I felt up to eating. When I was using a cane (because I have limited stamina) at the Windjammer, staff was immediately there helping me carry my things, promptly getting me drinks, and even going back to get a few things from the line for me.

Last but not least, the activities are great. They had assorted fabulous music, a parade, cartoon character visitors, contests, auctions, games... great live shows of acrobatic dance, comedy singing, and ice skating... a sportsplex with soccer, basketball, etc... a spa w/ free health talks... a casino, movies, a climbing wall, a "club" for open iceskating, live game shows (highly recommend QUEST) ...a kiddie waterpark, giant waterslides, Flowrider (boogie board and surfing), an adult only swim area ...at least 1400 activities in a week, I think.

I wished I could say something positive about RCCL but they are not for us. The Windjammer made me sick 2 different days. The food is just not good there. The deserts are horrible. And it is all about selling. MDR was ok but not great. Specialty restaurants were well worth it. Looking into another cruise line for next time.

anan479   Nov 30, 2016 - 5:26 pm

First time on a cruise and it's been horrible. We spent over 1800 for a balcony room and on the 1st day I walked into a room with a busted TV. Our TV have a lovely 7 in of black line to the left of our TV and they inform us they will not replace or fix it bc it still "works". Our toilet didn't work so I had to go to the service desk 6 times to complain and they finally sent someone after 11pm. When they try to fix it they flooded our bathroom 3 times so i once again went and complain and they finally sent housekeeping AFTER MIDNIGHT! Today is my son's birthday so I purchased a $20 Internet package to talk to him and guess what.... I'm completely offline and can't use my WiFi. Thanks RC for making me not want to ever cruise again.

Boarding was easy. Brought my water and soda. The beds aren't great and my biggest complaint was late luggage and not meeting our room attendant until almost 9pm. The ship is beautiful and so far the food has been good. Chops was amazing!!!

Last cruise we had carried pop wine and water. Must be in clear plastic bottles or cans be prepared to seal it back up... throw some duct tape in your purse or you'll be chasing cans . We used a luggage puller... we had no problems , and did this because they did not provide Dr Pepper products :( , may have changed due to security, but worth the try . Happy cruising

LexiWingo171   Nov 23, 2016 - 8:58 am

LexiWingo171
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

LexiWingo171   Nov 23, 2016 - 8:53 am

Extremely. If you bring on anything other than the 2 allowed bottles of wine (no boxed wine either) it will be confiscated. If you put it in your checked luggage, they will put your bag in "jail" and you have to go retrieve it.

A:

Guests are not allowed to bring beer, hard liquor, fortified wines or non-alcoholic beverages onboard for consumption or any other use on boarding day or while in port. Alcoholic beverages seized on boarding day will not be returned.

Guests wishing to bring personal wine and champagne onboard may do so only on boarding day, limited to two (2) 750 ml bottles per stateroom. Additional bottles of wine beyond two (2) bottles that are brought onboard or any alcoholic beverages purchased in ports of call or from Shops On Board will be stored by the ship and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the sailing. Wine may be consumed in any shipboard restaurant, dining venue, or within the guests' stateroom. Wine brought onboard may not be shared for consumption in private group events, and/or in lounges made private for the exclusive use of a group.

Just pulled this off the RCCL site. Hopes this helps😉

slempbrent.yahoo.com   Nov 22, 2016 - 6:48 pm

I would double check. I mean on the wine or liquids.

cruisintexas
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

cruisintexas   Nov 22, 2016 - 6:46 pm

You're allowed one bottle per person still to my knowledge. I've talked to people who carried on water just a week ago. I have a pass, due to a food allergy. They told me original containers, non perishable fine. Their have been some moms that packed snacks for the kiddos.

I chose not to buy one last cruise. The amount of alcohol I would need to consume to make it pay for itself was way more than my casual drink here and there. I'm not buying one this time around either. If I have one or two a day, I'm still coming out ahead. Plus we always bring our favorite wine with us.

maciejeski
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

maciejeski   Nov 22, 2016 - 4:51 pm

I'm thinking dress slacks and a nice shirt would be okay. I really doubt that they will turn you away. Not everyone has a suit and I'm sure they realize that.

anan479
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

anan479   Nov 22, 2016 - 4:18 pm

My other half is not too keen on suits and tie but what if he does slacks or khakis and nice collar shirt?

maciejeski
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

maciejeski   Nov 22, 2016 - 4:11 pm

Drinks are very expensive, if you are only planning on a couple of drinks, I would apply that to your on board credit. It will save you a lot of money. Otherwise, if you are planning on drinking everyday, multiple drinks then I would purchase the drink card. I can say that if you enjoy sodas or if you gave children who drink alit of soda, then I would definitely purchase the soda card. Hope this helps.

maciejeski   Nov 22, 2016 - 4:08 pm

No worries. I doubt you will even notice on the ship. You might when we tender though or if you do any boat rides to go snorkeling. You can definately bring your oils. I would put them in my carry on, so you can have them with you just in case you need them.

Hi Cars! We have late dining too. Did u sign up for My time dining? I think you can just show up or let them know what time each night u will be coming to dinner. I have heard that some people go at the same time each night and get the same table and waiter. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good alternative if early dining is full?

No we didn't. We are trying to get early dining but aren't having any luck. Hate late dining.
