I'm really hoping to see some whales from the ship, one reason we got a balcony! 17 more working days for me ☺

romantikcruiser   Mar 28, 2017 - 5:19 pm

We might even see the whales bubble fishing...I saw it once and even captured it on my cell phone...it was amazing

romantikcruiser   Mar 28, 2017 - 11:29 am

WHALES!!! Whales are passing San Francisco now!!! That means they should be established and feeding by the time we reach Juneau!!! Six more Mondays!!! HOORAY!!!!!! πŸ˜πŸŽ‰πŸΎβ›΄πŸš’πŸ›³πŸ›₯

romantikcruiser   Mar 27, 2017 - 5:33 pm

Uber is another choice

romantikcruiser   Mar 27, 2017 - 5:25 pm

You can cab it uber drop off your luggage then you could stroll around or go to the exploratorium or pier 39...I favor the exploratorium. Pier 39 is a tourist trap. You could go in...but then you wait. I have never heard of anyone being allowed to board before 10:30

We are staying at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf. I know it's not too far from the port, but haven't quite figured out how to get there yet.

romantikcruiser   Mar 27, 2017 - 12:12 pm

6 more Mondays!!! Hooray 😁. Has everyone figured out how they are getting to the pier. All of our friends have commitments or they drive a car that is too small for our luggage. Otherwise we would use the bon voyage experience as a bribe for a ride. We live 35 mikes from the pier and both the limo companies and the airport we services want $200 each way... I'd walk first...did find a service that would charge us $70 each way...so that's our plan ...6 more Mondays πŸ‘πŸΏπŸŽ‰πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘ŒπŸΏπŸ‘‹πŸΏπŸ›₯πŸ›³β›΄πŸš’πŸ˜΄

7 more Mondays. πŸŽ‰.

Has anyone started packing yet? Has anyone completed their packing?

For those who have your desired cabin I highly recommend that you inform your TA that you do not want a free upgrade. Sometimes the upgrades can be fantastic like an inside cabin to a balcony...but for the most part it would be a move to a more expensive cabin in a less than desirable location. On one cruise we had a balcony midship deck 8. We received the "upgrade" to a balcony deck 14 so far forward that we arrived in port 5 minutes before the rest of the ship

Most cruise lines offer the free upgrades...it tends to happen when a ship is not fully booked. Then they upgrade passengers and cut the rate on the cheaper cabins to fill the ship.

Now you can roll the dice to see if there is an upgrade and that you like it. But once upgraded you would have to be very lucky to get your old cabin. Someone else would have likely been upgraded to your cabin

Thus ends the sermon for the day. 7 count 'em 7 Mondays. Woo hoo

We have decided to take two excursions...the evening whale watching in Juneau and the orca watching in Victoria we always take the whale watching in Juneau. This will be our first evening one. With the long days I do not anticipate having trouble seeing...but this will be a first for us...the Victoria excursion is another first...but we are 8 count 'em 8 Mondays away. Yay

romantikcruiser   Mar 13, 2017 - 12:26 pm

Ok folks...8 more Mondays...anyone planning to visit the specialty dining...what's your favorite restaurant...what dish there are you anticipating...we are going to give sabotini's another try...but we are definitely going to the crown grill...normally go with the filet...might do New York this time

romantikcruiser   Mar 06, 2017 - 10:10 pm

Southern 9 more Mondays ...how are you getting to the pier...have you considered the bon voyage experience as a bribe for a ride?

romantikcruiser   Mar 06, 2017 - 10:08 pm

Ten Mondays until we wave goodbye to San Francisco. What do you plan for the sail away...I might nap...unless I get enough sleep during the lifeboat drill...I must give credit to Princess...they make those lifeboat drill as painless as possible...I have been on lines where they require us to stand outside while they completed roll call...I thought that I finished that after I left West Point...the only complaint I have with the lifeboat drill is trying to get an elevator ...I tend to bring my iPad and read for a while...sometime before we reach Juneau the elevator clears...regarding the lifeboat drill...I know that in case of an emergency my only thought will be "OLD GUY,CHILDREN AND WOMEN FIRST!!!"

But in case I am rested I will wander aft and film the City receding...what are your plans

Ten Mondays Hooray!!!

Can't wait! We are on the same cruise.

romantikcruiser   Feb 23, 2017 - 12:25 pm

It's pier 27. They only use pier 35 or the terminal near At&t park when they have multiple ships in at the same time. And even then they give The home based ship the priority berth...but the pier is on the website and should be on your itinerary. If you gave them a cellphone or email they will notify you regarding any changes

romantikcruiser   Feb 20, 2017 - 3:21 pm

11 Mondays until we leave...anyone have a pre cruise ritual...ours involves my asking mrs-the-old-guy if she has all documents enough times where she starts to weigh the advantages of having me around versus my death benefits...once we are in the terminal and listening to some passengers complain inspiring us to pray "Dear Lord...please do not have these grouches at our dining table...AMEN"...then dumping our carry on and grabbing a snack...followed by relaxing in our room...well I relax watching television...mrs-the-old-guy relaxes by telling me that I could watch tv at home...then I have my big sigh...and I love all of it...what are your pre cruise traditions

After the second dinner we ask our waiter what nights would be good for us to go to the specialty dining. By then a good waiter would have an idea of what foods appeal to you and they can recommend a night when you won't miss a special meal. If the waiter is hesitant to offer an opinion then ask the head waiter if you can see the future menus so that you can decide which night to schedule. The specialty dining is not so overbooked that you need to prebook...but I would book2 days in advance. Though if you plan to eat before 7 or after 8 on most nights you can walk up

southerncomf44
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

southerncomf44   Feb 16, 2017 - 11:00 pm

We can now make reservations online for the specialty restaurants, but since I'm not sure when the formal nights are and that is when we plan to eat there, I guess I'll wait until we are on the ship.

I would hold off until after the cruise. While on the ship you can buy future cruise credit ... it costs $100 and it acts as your deposit so you do not have to tie up funds for your deposit. Depending on the length of your cruise you will receive ship board credit up to $300 depending on cruise length and cabin. If you do not use it within two years your $100 is refunded

19 more Mondays. Hooray

romantikcruiser   Dec 15, 2016 - 11:46 am

The grand is in dry dock...they are changing the December 20th cruise...it will be an 8 day cruise starting on the 22nd and skipping two ports...but the compensation is great. 20% of cruise fare refunded. 20% off of a future cruise. $300 per person OBC. And any of that that is not used along with veterans OBC is refunded. For those who need it Princess will put up folks in a San Francisco hotel

Yes, this is our first Alaska cruise. I just went on my first cruise since childhood last year. And fell in love with cruising! My partner of 27 years and our good friend and I are sharing a mini suite. Should be a blast!

romantikcruiser   Nov 29, 2016 - 12:16 pm

Yes. My mind handles small numbers. Large numbers make me regress to my childhood and I will roll my eyes πŸ‘€ sigh πŸ˜” loudly and throw myself on the floor crying 😭 that I don't want to wait. Not a pretty sight

We are also considering the orca watching in Victoria

romantikcruiser   Nov 07, 2016 - 8:08 pm

So I am planning the whale watching trip. Woo hoo. Only 26 more MondaysπŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸΏβš“οΈπŸΉπŸΎβ›΄πŸ›³

romantikcruiser   Nov 07, 2016 - 7:33 pm

Anyone planning an excursion. We always take the Juneau whale watching trip. In August the ship arrived in the afternoon and we left on the whale watching mid afternoon. There were only a few whales out. In May we will be arriving late again. At first we were planning to skip it but I am an optimist. And I figure in August the whales were leaving and in May they will be arriving.

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 11:19 am

Alaska's magnificence has been there for millennia It will still be there An hour after the ship disembarks

When leaving I always choose to leave last. The fussy crowds have moved on and I pick up my luggage and wait for my ride

For the lifeboat drill either plan to take the stairs or bring a good book and wait a half hour. The elevators get packed right after the drill

I hope this helped

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 11:13 am

If you are going to just walk around I would wait for an hour after the ship disembarks. That way the crowds have disbursed and you can just walk off. The ship is large enough that you seldom feel the crowds. But you do feel them when disembarking. Everyone wants to get off first.

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 11:06 am

For walking around on your own. Skagway has some interesting historic spots. But there are lots of shops surrounding them. And if there are more than two ships in port it can feel crowded. Ketchikan is the best for walking around. Historic sites, fish ladders, Eagles

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 10:59 am

In Ketchikan I found the totem state park to be a waste of time

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 10:56 am

I have heard that folks were happy with hiring taxis for a few hours and fishing trips. And they know that their reputation will be shot if you miss the ship. But the ship will only wait for Princess excursions. So that is a small gamble when taking private tours.

The tram in Juneau has magnificent views. I would avoid the Red Dog saloon. It is a crowded over priced tourist trap

romantikcruiser   Nov 05, 2016 - 10:50 am

True. But I would check with others for recommendations Or even check with cruise staff. They have been to port numerous times and they know what's what. In Ketchikan we took s double decker bus tour that we found off ship. It boogied down to...and I am not kidding..."here's the grocery store. That's where we buy or groceries. There's the gas station. That's where we buy our gas. Etc..."

barbabbott   Nov 05, 2016 - 4:30 am

I have heard that you are better to buy excursions when you get off the boat. Apparently can bargain with the locals

ladybulldogssoftball16.yahoo.com   Nov 04, 2016 - 10:55 pm

I am very excited

romantikcruiser   Nov 04, 2016 - 9:09 pm

Are you still juiced. Even though o go there a lot. I am still excited

romantikcruiser   Nov 04, 2016 - 12:22 pm

Hard to get lost and you see similar views as the train. Just from the other side of the valley

Ketchikan the Saxman village is nice

Victoria we are there for such a short time it is difficult to get more than a taste

romantikcruiser   Nov 04, 2016 - 12:20 pm

You are correct. Received the email yesterday. Can recommend some experiences. Juneau the whale watching trip. If you just wish to visit Mendenhall it is cheaper to take the bus to the center. If money is no problem then the dog sledding on the glacier is a bucket list event

Skagway the train offers beautiful photo ops and there are souvenirs that are only sold on the train or you can rent a car.

ladybulldogssoftball16.yahoo.com   Nov 03, 2016 - 11:37 am

Princess has them available now for this cruise

romantikcruiser   Nov 03, 2016 - 11:27 am

You can't book a Princess sponsored excursion until 120 days before departure. You can try to book s private trip. But that would be better done 60 days out. You might have better options and could do some research or ask fellow cruisers what their experiences were

ladybulldogssoftball16.yahoo.com   Nov 02, 2016 - 1:48 pm

Has anyone booked any excursions yet?

romantikcruiser   Oct 31, 2016 - 12:54 pm

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!πŸ‘»

πŸ‘Ί
Only 27 more Monday's. Hip-hip-BOO-RAY!!!

romantikcruiser   Oct 25, 2016 - 12:35 pm

Balconies are very nice...and Alaska is one of the very few itineraries where a balcony improves the experience...if you choose not to party it is a peaceful place for the sail away...at the glaciers the ship spins to allow both sides viewing opportunities...so you can see without jostling and it is a peaceful place to view the inside passage..you will not be disappointed

mamasaenz
Contributor Level: Deck Hand

mamasaenz   Oct 25, 2016 - 9:56 am

My parents are on the ruby and they called, and said my husband and I have a cabin off the back off the ship.
They said there would be more to see if we had a balcony on either side of the ship. HELP does any one know?
I read the comments above and I think we made the right choice.

romantikcruiser   Oct 24, 2016 - 10:00 pm

28 more Monday's and I can see how stretchy my sweat pants will be after I spend significant time grazing through the Grand's many eateries

romantikcruiser   Oct 24, 2016 - 4:33 pm

The sharp crystal clear air making distant snow capped mountains appear to be close enough to almost touch

Foods of different styles to match your appetites whether you wish to experiment or to enjoy familiar dishes

Room kept to your specifications without you lifting a finger

New and interesting people to meet or comfortable places to sit and reflect. Or sit and nap

romantikcruiser   Oct 24, 2016 - 4:29 pm

You will love it. Have lots of memory on your camera. My last trip while docked I saw three eagles flying together. They landed on the trees and started crying at each other. And seeing the whales...dolphins playing in the ship's wake. Seeing the glaciers and watching the equivalent of a fifty story building crash into the water.
