Ramesh (Ram) has over 20 years of experience in healthcare, beginning with his first position out of high school as a combat medic in the U.S. Army. Ram’s last ten years has been in nursing education and/or administration. Currently, Ram works as a Consultant for the State of North Carolina, Division of Health Service Regulation. In his current position, Ram is required to function independently or as a member of a survey team which surveys Medicare certified home health agencies, hospice services, non-certified home care providers, end stage renal disease facilities, and nursing homes for compliance with State and Federal requirements. The position is based in Raleigh with the Department of Health and Human Services and requires extensive travel to facilities located throughout North Carolina. While working in the private sector, Ram was in charge of meeting all the educational needs for the clinicians within North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida for the largest privately-held healthcare company in the Southeastern United States. Prior to that, Ram was a Clinical Professor in the Department of Adult Health at the Margaret C. Moore School of Nursing at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). During his 10 years at UNCG, he taught at all levels in the undergraduate program, including fundamentals of nursing, nursing health assessment, intermediate nursing skills, and advanced med/surg nursing. He holds a bachelor's and a Master’s degree in Nursing from UNCG, a Master’s in Business Administration from the Bryan School of Business and Economics, and a post-Master’s certificate in Distance Education from Thomas Edison State University. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and hopes to complete his dissertation in 2015. As a nurse, Ram has experience in hospice, home health, long term care, emergency nursing, critical care nursing, and rehabilitation nursing. His certification is in rehabilitation nursing (CRRN). In addition to his position at UNCG, Mr. Upadhyaya has taught at other schools of nursing, and is called upon regularly as a management consultant in healthcare for both the public and the private sector. Ram has published articles in journals such as American Journal of Nursing, Advance for Nurses, and Nursing Perspectives. He has presented more than a dozen papers at state, national, and international conferences. In the past year, he has presented papers for the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses in San Francisco, the National League for Nursing educational summit, and the American Assembly for Men in Nursing in New Orleans, LA. He has co-authored a book with Sue E. Meiner about Gerontologic variations in older adults that is currently in use in hundreds of Schools of Nursing, and co-authored a chapter with Dr. Don Kautz in a Rehabilitation Nursing textbook, edited by Kris Mauk.
