Interesting. Large warehouse with native vendors selling various handcrafted items from beads, t-shirts to jewelry. They also had some entertainment and native dancers.

90 minute bus ride to our destination of Mayan Ruins "Quirigua Archaeological Explorer" through quite dirty and poverty laden villages and cities. Our tour guide was good but we could not reconcile the pride she spoke of for the local people with their lack of simple ability to care for even the little they had. there was trash everywhere and buzzards knew where to feed. Once we got to Quirigua it was interesting and again our guide, of Mayan descent, was very good. Travel back was tough. 30 minute stop due to road construction was not fun but we did stop at a "Hibiscus Restaurant" which was a restaurant which our tour guide was familiar with and past friends of the family. We stopped for a pineapple drink and a tour of a pineapple plantation as well as wonderful tropical gardens.

We didn't see anything on the trolley tour. It seemed a shame to exploit these people with a trolley going through this depressed area. We didn't stop so couldn't even help their economy. Trolly was very bumpy and hard on your back. My husband was unable to get around the next day due to back pain

We normally do not sign up for the ship sponsored excursions. We usually travel with at least six other people and we find that we do better on our own. At Santo Tomas, we took a Happy Fish boat tour to an ancient castle. The castle itself was a let-down - it was only a "drive-by" because of time constraints. But the trip itself was breathtaking. I felt like I was riding through a very beautiful movie! This island is surprising because there are so few roads. Most of the people that live there get around by boat. We stopped in the small town of Livingston, which really gives you an idea of how people live there. We witnessed several women washing their clothes at the outdoor laundry, which consists of several concrete sinks. Caution: the few bathrooms are primitive and the boat ride is long. We felt like it was well worth it.

An absolutely beautiful place once you get past the town that surrounds the port. The second you walk out the gate you're bombarded by begging children who want $1 and dozens of taxi drivers! My advice: take the excursion to the see the rain forest and swim in the waterfalls. It was the best part of our entire trip. So beautiful and peaceful. The water is crystal clear.

Since my wife is disabled and in a wheel chair, we took a bus tour of the area, which was conducted by the local tour directed and enjoyable. Unfortunately we , due to her condition, were unable to go to the other activities offered at this port.

We love Acheology and have done many sites in Mexico, Europe etc so we were told to go on the Quirigua Acheological Explorer. The site is ok but NOT worth the very long bus ride to the site and back ! It took almost 2 hours to get there and longer back. This site would have been ok if it had been a shorter trip from the ship. It left us very little time to do much else. The driver and guide on the bus were very nice and the guide met us after for a meal at a local resturant

The indoor market next to the pier is great fun, free dancing and music going on, many vendors, nice not to travel far from the ship.
