Took a tour of the city by boat and land. Visited the Fort and learned more history. It is worth it to take scheduled excursions. Well worth the money!

Cartagena is a beautiful city to sail into. We took a ship’s excursion taking in the highlights. First stop was the fortress and our guide made sure we took a break at each level and in the shade. The old city was next including Pedro Claver church, the former inquisition museum and Las Bóvedas. We ended with a folklore show and the naval museum. It was an extremely hot morning and I’m glad we opted for a tour rather DIY. Vendors are persistent but my advice would be not to give eye contact or converse with them unless you’re serious about buying from them. Our guide was very informative and we never felt unsafe. I would definitely visit again.

Don't try walking to the old town area from the ship, for a $10 taxi ride you will be glad you spent the money, it would be a very long walk otherwise. We started to do so after going through the taxi\tour driver gauntlet as you exit the port. (They are very aggressive), but after making it to the main street and then trying to figure out how to get across heavy traffic and which way to go, we opted for one of the persistent drivers that followed us all the way out of the parking lot and to the street. He then talked us into paying $10 each for a 2 hour guided tour of the historical areas and of old town and the price included taking us back to the port. It turned out to be a good deal for us!

Loved the old walled city. Drove through with guide because simply too hot & humid for me. Worth it to see Botero statue, IMO. Loved the park at the port: charming and attractive.

We don't usually do excursions but in this case we took the Hop on Hop Off bus. You get the same "Old City" tour as others booking a more expensive tour specific to the Old City. Due to limited time you can't really "hop on and off" the bus or you will never make it back to the ship in time. But you do get a good look at the city.

Beggars and street vendors were a bit too aggressive for my comfort but overall it was a good port to visit.
