LOVED Hilo. We went to the top of another mountain, but this time the tallest in Hawaii. We visited all the telescopes and saw parts of the island that look like Mars! Rainbow falls was beautiful and worth the stop. Another great tour guide!

We rented a car for $48. The car rental shuttle will pick you up from the pier and take you to the airport, about three miles away, where you can rent a car. Couldn’t have been easier. We met a couple at Kilauea who hired a car and driver for $325. They said they wish they had talked to us first. Perhaps they should just read Cruise Critic. The first stop was Akaka Falls. Do this one in the morning because the falls face east. The sun will illuminate the falls perfectly in the morning. If you do it in the afternoon, the sun will be behind the falls and your pictures will be backlit. Next stop was Kilauea. While Akaka Falls was sunny and hot, Kilauea was rainy and cold. We wish we had our sweatshirts, but when it’s 85°and sunny, how do you know? This was kind of a good news bad news experience. The rain and mist kept me from getting really sharp pictures of the caldera, but the steam vents certainly stood out. I leaned over one to see how hot the steam actually was. Take my advice and don’t try this yourself. Steam is hot. We stayed at Kilauea about two hours and headed back to Hilo. I would have stayed longer, but the rain showed no signs of letting up and we had done all we could do without getting soaked.

We did the volcano and island adventure tour with C Big island Tours, it was a great tour.....be sure you get Edmond as tour guide. We saw the black sand beach, Volcano Crater / Jaggar Museum, Steam vents, Lava Tube, Macadamia nut factory, Orchid Garden and rainbow falls.

I loved Hilo! We took a lava expedition to the lava entry into the ocean. We also took a cab to the nearest black sand beach which was very cool!

Amazing waterfalls - Akaka, Rainbow, Pe'e Pe'e; and Volcano National Park (even though it's mostly closed, still great info in Hilo)

For me, this was the best port! Went to Volcanoes National Park, awesome to see the lava spurting up in the distance! Loved the Lava Fields!! The Lava Tube was also pretty cool.

We took a taxi tour by a local Hawaiian, this was a wonderful option for us, it wasn't a ship excursion, just a local guy. We spent about 3 hours driving around the island taking pictures and he showed us all the sites. Much cheaper than any ship excursion and we got the "real" feel of the island. Cost $50 for 2.

The ship’s tour to the private botanical gardens that but the sea is as wonderful as everyone says and we even can grow some of these plants at home. We paid $20 for the golf cart ride in and out and we were glad we did. As it is steep and eats up your time. There is still plenty of walking , as you explore and take wonderful pictures. The ship uses a great company to drive you in smaller minibuses and their drivers did great commentary. This was our sixth trip to Hawaii and we had never gone here or seen anything as beautiful.
