The Volcanoes National Park was closed during the visit. We rented a car for the day and went to see Rainbow Falls and stopped at Carlsmith Beach Park to see and swim with sea turtles. Stopped off in town to walk through some shops and flea market.

We did an excursion went thru a lava tube that was really intresting, saw beautiful waterfalls but went later in the day. We were told that the rainbow only comes out in the morning. The plants and flowers were just beautiful.

Industrial port so an excursion is almost a must. We went to the volcano and thought is was interesting. We got off the island about a week before the current large eruptions started so not certain what will await us on our next trip.

We did a volcano tour but of course with recent eruptions and damage it wasn’t as we had seen it 10 years before. The guide was excellent and coach comfortable .

We took a LONG bus tour! Was fun, but really too long for us ;-) Driver was fantastic and oh so fun! We didn't really get to any shopping venues except Big Hawaiian Chocolates, but that was fine for us.

Loved Hilo. Took a tour with John B. From Pineapple Xpress Tours and got to see and touch lava from last year as well as active smoldering land. Incredible. Don’t miss lunch at the Mauna Loa factory ($6.75 pp inc hamburger chips and drink). The best chocolate macadamia nut ice cream on earth!!!. John is Ohana—Family!

Did the "Circle of Fire" helicopter tour and of course, wish it was longer, and more lava flowing, but still was a tremendous experience! Hilo is a pretty harbor as well, would like to see more of it next time. Wish we could have been in port longer as wanted to do a "night" star gazing at Mauna Kea but can't because not in port early enough or late enough. Maybe they could add some time or not stay 2 days in Maui?

We decided to stay onboard as we have been to Hilo and shopping was not our idea of enjoyment anyway. What a great decision! We had a five-star luxury hotel nearly to ourselves. Now that is a REAL relaxing vacation experience.
