The port is in the industrial area of the city. That being said it's an easy walk into Historic Hilo. Car rentals are readily available at the near by airport. It's very easy to drive in the Hilo area.

Loved Hilo. Did a local tour company to see the Hilo side of the Island. Marylou's Big Island Guided Tours. Her husband Ken showed us all there was to see in a fun packed day trip to Volcanoe National Park, Rainbow Falls, Thurston Lava Tube and many more sites of interest. Fabulous smaller tours at a fraction of the cruise ship price.

Port itself is nothing to look at as it is in industrial area. We did Hop on Hop Off bus. Their office is easy 5 min walk from port. $20 for all day and took you same sights as more expensive tours. Explore places at your leisure.

In Hilo always check out the Hilo coffee mill. Go to the black sand beach and Hilo little town at the framers market and pickup some good fruits to take back to the ship.

Rented a car and drove up to Mauna Kea. Could only get to the visitor center (8,000 feet) because of icy roads up higher. But still, an AMAZING island, even though it rained. But that's ok! It IS Hawaii after all!

We enjoyed the freedom of the Hop-on-Hop Off buses and toured the city and visited Rainbow Falls. We went back to the ship, changed into swimsuits and got our snorkeling equipment and returned to Black Beach to swim with the turtles.
