Rent a car and drive to Rainbow Falls and Volcano National Park. Can stay as long as you want at what you like. Skip the Macadamia nut plant tour; tourist trap waste of time and the Orchid place (go to a good botanical garden at home and use the time on the volcano). Was told driving 3 hours to the black sand beach was a waste of time.

It was great for our excursion (Volcano, Moana Loa factory, Thomas A Jaggar Museum, etc.), but I wish I would have known to take an umbrella! Evidently, HILO receives quite a bit of rain all the time and I wasn't aware of that!

Went on the Volcano excursion which was informative and educating. Seeing the volcano and the lava rocks it produces was unbelievable, If I had to do it again I would make sure it was the excursion that took you to the volcano which was actually flowing into the sea in a video it was a sight to behold,
