Our favorite port. Most notably because of our once in a lifetime experience of watching the volcano erupting from a helicopter & watching a huge cliff fall into the ocean whenever the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the island. We were in the air whenever it hit & literally watched a huge 400 ft tall, mile long cliff/shelf fall into the ocean. We have the video to prove it!

We had an excursion with a local who drove us up to Volcano, where we saw hot lava from the Jagger observatory! He took us to off the beaten paths to see steam vents and explained things that we had never heard about (Pele's tears and hair). Saw the Thursten Lava Tube then he took us to Hilo to the Mauna Loa Nut Factory, Hawaiian Candy Factory and black sand beach, where we saw 4 turtles sunning themselves.

Not much in Downtown Hilo, but visit the awesome Botannical Gardens (if the volcano tours are cancelled). Although the volcano tour was cancelled, the ship cruised slowly past the volcanic area at night. It was an awesome sight and a trip highlight

We went on an excursion to visit the Hawaii Volcano National Park and Rainbow Falls. Very enjoyable all day experience. It's great to see the ground steaming around you.....made me feel about as small as I've ever felt before. That was a really great feeling as my ego can be a bit too much sometimes. It really puts things into perspective.

We visited Volcano National Park. We saw lava coming up from a crater a mile away. The rainbow falls were really pretty.

This may have been my favorite day. We had a small group tour that took us to a farm for private viewing areas of several waterfalls. He even offered to take pictures for us. We got to visit a little shop on the farm where we tasted their products and got to buy from them as well Then we went to a lava tube which was absolutely amazing We ended at a black sand beach. Gorgeous. Our tour guide was also able to show us a sea turtle! After the excursion we took a taxi and ate at Moes Fish and chips - delicious! They make their fish from local varieties. We had Ono and it was probably the best I’ve ever had. Plus there was not a drop of grease anywhere! We did some shopping. Stop in Extreme Exposure fine art gallery - incredible work there! (You can find them on Facebook too)

We loved this port! We came from Vancouver, BC to the Hawaiian Islands on RC Brilliance of the Seas and had the most amazing weather! This was our first time in Hawaii and it was everything we ever could have imagined and more!!

Hilo was nice. We did not plan any excursions because we did not want to go on any of the tours to the volcanos. However, we got off of the ship and took a tour from one of the vendors standing outside of the terminal. We heard about the houses that can be rented for one dollar ($1.00) for a hundred years and that it could be willed to family members to live there for the remainder of the time. It was $45.00 per person. We saw lava rocks and heard how this island was formed by a volcano. We were able to walk down to the black sand beach and see the lava rocks up close. We saw historic buildings that had withstood a tsunami and we went to the Rainbow Falls Lookout which we read creates rainbows. This was a beautiful site. We also went to a chocolate candy factory and got to sample some of the chocolates. I truly enjoyed this island.
