Venice demands walking or riding a boat - no motorized travel otherwise. The main site here is San Marco and Rialto bridge - worth the visit. If you are using a boat, see if you can request a round trip, if feasible, or a 2-3 card. Glassware from Murano and tapestry from Italy worth looking at.

We chose not to take it planned excursion, but wonder about on her own, and that was great. Be careful pick pockets and make sure that you have clothes that have zippered pockets or a bag that is free proof. We literally got lost wandering around the canals and the small areas and had a wonderful time. There is so much to see and if you need to move about water taxis are great fun

Pre/post stays..try and book a hotel near the Piazzale Roma bus station area, to avoid vaporetto trips and humping suitcasea over endless bridges. It also takes longer queuing for people mover than it does walking into Venice.

If needing a taxi, get as much info as possible. We needed to get to airport and were only told by HAL that taxi's would be "limited"; after waiting at the taxi next to the ship for awhile in vain, we learned--from another ship's cruisers--that we needed to take a shuttle bus to the next pier where there were plenty of taxis.
