we stayed a night before the cruise, 2 nights after the cruise. we stayed at the Santa Chiara hotel, in the residenzia, a few meters away from the main hotel. Superb location, really happy ! we took the bus at the airport and 20 minutes later, we arrived at the door of the hotel for 8€ each. big room and extra large bathroom. no view ! at walking distance (people mover 3.5€ each) from the cruise port. we were on the first floor but there was no elevator. on our return, we stayed at the Centuro Hotel. also suberb location...just between the Rialto bridge and the St-Mark place..wow. there is a balcony off the breakfast place viewing on the canal very pretty. no elevator. i never realized there was no elevator but this time we were not on the first floor so not as practical ! it could even be irrirating after a while. the personnel. we purchased a 2 day illimited pass for the vaporetto (30€ each). we walked the small streets (take a gps with you lol...) and took the vaporetto as well, wonderful. you have to be carefull of the Contituzion bridge...question of design, it is hard to see the first step when you going down on each side of the bridge. easy to miss the step and hurt youself very bad. i crossed that bridge several times and saw multiple minors accidents happening while i was there. we were there on july 27-28 and sept 7-8-9....it was really really crowded, tourists everywhere lol...found 2 nice bistros: the F30 and the bistrot Santa Lucia, both just off the train station. very good price for really really good food !

While I would not generalize all Italians, the Venetians we met were incredibly rude and seemed to resent tourists. Our guide on the walking tour of Venice and Doge's Palace went so far as to say that tourism has not been good for Venice and that the city is suffering because it cannot withstand the pressures of mass tourism. Her remarks were offensive given that she is directly employed in the very industry which she and other Venetians seem to believe threaten their city. Their economy benefits tremendously from the trickle down effects of tourism and natives would do well to remember that, because while Venetian masks, leather goods and blown glass seem to be manufactured on a large scale, how much Murano glass, Venetian masks and leather goods can a person buy? Is it enough for Venice to ease its reliance on mass tourism and its economy would still thrive? My husband and I have decided that this is not a city we wish to visit again. We work very hard for our money and would prefer to spend it in a destination where visitors are treated with more respect.

Plan for several days to take in the antiquity and tangles of this City/State. Note: If you're not a Christian you'll be challenged to appreciate most of what Venice has to offer.

What can you say, it is Venice. We had been here before but we booked a day before the start of the cruise so we could revisit some of our favorite places.

If you are on your own consider 48 hr pass for actv transportation . This made using public transportation easy and non stressful .

Far too crowded in July! Sadly overtourism had ruined venice. To find good food that isn’t over priced, get away from the main tourist areas & avoid restaurants with pictures on their menu.
