Large city. Acropolis is worth taking the ships tour because you can skirt the ticket lines.

We were in Athens for two days.. the first day we took a tour and it was very nice the second day we decided to be on our own and we really had no direction ..it was certainly not the ships fault it was our own... so I would recommend going through the tour office so that they can direct you properly .

Athens Cruise Port is huge! It was hard to give the taxi driver directions to the specific port number, many Greeks are not very educated in English, tip learn your port number in Greek. We started our cruise in Athens and had planed to stay in Athens for a couple days before the cruise but the Greek Air Traffic Controllers went on strike and we didn’t arrive till the morning of our cruise date. Didn’t get to see much of Athens, but what we saw from the train from the airport and taxi to the Cruise Port it seems we didn’t miss much.

Booked a walking tour with Viator. Our guide was waiting with a sign past customs to very easy to spot. Approx 16 in our group - all from the ship. She spoke English well and was knowledgeable about the sights we saw. There was a mix up between what we paid for and what she was delivering: the entry fees should have been an extra 30 Euros for all three sights but she thought we were only going to 2 at a cost of 38 Euro. One of the American ladies in our group bought this to her attention as we were not going to see the temple of Zeus. We should have confirmed details earlier. Anyhow, I doubt we would have had time as the day flew past. The Acropolis was amazing!! Lots and lots of walking on uneven cobblestones, up stairs, down stairs, up hills. I was surprised at the number of elderly people with their walking frames and sticks doing tours. We had a few in our group, our guide didn't rush and had plenty of stops on the way up to the Acropolis. Long lines at the toilets. Looking back, this was the highlight of our trip and I'm so glad we did an excursion. Our last stop was a bit rushed as our guide wanted to make sure we got back to our ship in plenty of time. Be aware of people trying to sell you things you don't want. Before you know it you've got something around your wrist or in your hands and you're expected to pay for it.

The city was easy to navigate and the ruins were great to see. We took the subway back to the ship and that worked out very nicely.

We went to Temple of Poseiden, south of Piraeaus and Athens. Heat was immense in Athens and they had to shut down the Acropolis, but its an amazing place to visit. Wonderful people.

If you don't visit Athens, there's not much in Piraeus.
