Amazing and hectic, once in a lifetime experience, to say the least. You have to get up very early and wait for your bus number to be called, and file through all kinds of security, and customs at Alexandria, etc but once on our tour bus, our guide was a local woman with a master’s degree and she talked and talked, nonstop for 2+ hours on our ride from the port to the first pyramid, called The Step at Badrashin. (Be prepared to see a lot of men in uniforms carrying automatic rifles, everywhere you go.) We were rushed and everywhere we stopped there were at least 20 other tour busses full of other tourists, trying to keep up with their guides. I still enjoyed it but it was not usually the way I travel or enjoy cultural attractions. The camel ride men are very aggressive and want to keep grabbing your phone to take a picture, and then demand 20 euro or 10 euro from you and are relentless. I did not like this AT ALL but it is just part of the experience. There are stray dogs laying around looking sad, everywhere. The tombs at The Step are tight quarters and dark and I was too uncomfortable to stay in them for more than a minute with all those people crowded around. Then our bus took us to see Ramesses the Great at an outdoor museum, gave us about 30 minutes there and then we rode to Giza. The traffic and manner of driving there looks like utter chaos but it seems to work for those used to it. Lots of buildings, tons of them unfinished. They took us to eat at a Hyatt hotel restaurant there and it was very comfortable with great selection and clean, beautiful restrooms (which by then were a welcome sight). I think we had an hour, then off we were shuttled to the pyramids of Giza. Amazing to behold, truly. But littered with garbage and EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE people in your face and space wanting you to buy this or that, NONSTOP. THe Sphinx was super cool. Our guide rushed us (saying we had 20 minutes there) to only then force us to spend 45 minutes at some dumb souvenir shop in a congested traffic area in the city, when we were already late for the ship. I refused to go inside and sat on the bus, watching men with guns stand around outside and the worst traffic behavior I have ever seen, by pedestrians and those on scooters and in tiny cars and in giant buses. Craziness. The bus drive back took close to 3 hours and everyone was exhausted. But I gotta say, it was worth all of that and a very memorable experience.

The history and the ancient pyramids and so forth were amazing and breathtaking to see in person but the poverty was so hard to take. Also, the air pollution made our eyes water the entire time not to mention we got a bit sick after returning even though we did not eat anything or drink anything while visiting the country. The only thing that I think was a huge downfall was that our tour guide left us to figure things out on our own. She was horrible! Plus the fact that the beggars would hound us and grab onto our things and she did nothing to stop it. That's the main reason this tour wasn't all it was cracked up to be. But, the history you cannot deny...
